Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Many digital designers, even fans of Macromedia Dreamweaver, use Adobe Photoshop/ImageReady and Illustrator for image creation and manipulation, constantly going back and forth between applications. In this latest Bible, Dreamweaver power user Joseph Lowery proved to himself that Macromedia Fireworks, which handles both vector and bitmap art, is an effective replacement for those applications, increasing both productivity and creativity.

As with others in the series, Fireworks 3 Bible works well both for beginners who need guidance learning the software and experienced users looking for a good reference manual. Although not tutorial-based, you perform step-by-step tasks along the way and the index is thorough enough to help you find solutions to problems.

The book is not written as a face-off between Fireworks and other applications, but you'll quickly discover tasks for which Fireworks has the edge, particularly in Web production. For example, methods for creating hotspots and sliced GIFs are similar to those in Photoshop/ImageReady, but here we learn how to use Fireworks' Insert Slice option to instantly encompass an entire object, including all of the drop shadow or other effects.

Fireworks is included in the Dreamweaver Studio package, and the construction of the application fits the Macromedia model. This is most apparent when creating rollovers; Fireworks uses Behaviors, while ImageReady uses layers and a rollover/animation panel. Lowery is adept at explaining the whys along with the hows, and the chapter on activating Fireworks with Behaviors clearly explains this method and gives a firm foundation on how Behaviors work in Dreamweaver, Flash, and, on a much larger scale, Director.

There's not much to complain about in this excellent book, except for a small but confusing organisational choice in the step-by-step instructions: a more intuitive organisation would have been to have the "Notes", that offer advice and caveats, precede the step to which they refer rather than follow them. Otherwise, Fireworks 3 Bible is as comprehensive as it is well written and may just convert those diehard Illustrator/Photoshop/ImageReady Web designers. --Angelynn Grant, Amazon.com

1.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive yet utterly confusing, 9 Jan 2001
By john.ratcliffe@ntlworld.com (Salisbury, Wiltshire) - See all my reviews
This is a very heavy, and seemingly comprehensive manual. But, it will not suit everyone.

If you have NEVER used a graphics package before, then DO NOT buy this book.

It does a very good job of explaining what the tools are, and what they are for, but does not explain in absolute basic terms how to create buttons, images etc. I would suggest that an absolute beginner would be better off starting with a Dummies type guide until they are comfortable with the interface.

A word of advice, don't try using Paint Shop Pro, because it's just as hard to learn. Perservere with Fireworks, and the reward will be yours!

*In conclusion* A fantastically comprehensive book for experianced users of graphics programs, but I expect a bible to be able to work magic for beginers, and this one falls way short of the mark...

5.0 out of 5 stars Do you really realise how much you can do with Fireworks?, 9 Oct 2000
Do you really realise how much you can do with Fireworks? I didn't, until I bought this...

I've spruced up my webwork so much, in so little time, that the 30-odd quid for this book is perfectly justified. Text has leaped out of the screen, using the library and symbols has become second nature (after a long time of struggling), and Joseph Lowery is now on my Christmas card list.

There really is so much to this book that the manual and tutorials fail to cover (at least in an easy to grasp manner), such as disjoint rollovers, animation, etc.

If you'd ever like to get paid for your web design, invest in this; it'll make your life so much simpler. I've now got the time to get to work on Dreamweaver!

5.0 out of 5 stars For beginners and professionals alike, 6 Sep 2000
By A Customer
I personally found this book's contents great. Like most of the bible series, these books cover every aspect of the program; they are informative and easy to digest, they suit beginners and professionals alike. I keep this book as well as Lowerys Dreamweaver bible by my desk at all times and constantly use them for reference...If you only get one job from the knowledge you gain from this book... Happy building.
