Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

If you've mastered Excel and need to develop customised applications, Microsoft Excel 2000 Power Programming with VBA should have a place by your side. Written by noted Excel expert and PC World columnist John Walkenbach, it will thrust you deep into the inner workings of Excel and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) to get you writing code immediately.

Somewhat text-heavy (as programming books tend to be), it still contains a number of good illustrations and screenshots to effectively teach you. The first three sections cover the fundamentals of Excel and VBA; the next three deal with programming and development topics such as user forms, pivot tables, and event handling; the final section covers miscellaneous issues like compatibility, file manipulation and class modules.

The five appendices are useful for referencing Excel and VBA information, and the accompanying CD-ROM contains all the code and files you'll need to work through the book, not to mention the shareware version of Walkenbach's Power Utility Pack. (The full version is available through a free offer.) Nobody ever said programming was easy, but with Microsoft Excel 2000 Power Programming with VBA it's a lot simpler. --Rob Lightner

5.0 out of 5 stars The ONLY book you need on Excel programming, 23 Jul 1999
By A Customer
I have been waiting for a revised edition to the previous book which involved power programming with Excel 95 (Excel 97 was skipped). My knowledge of Excel increased exponentially with this book, both in programming skills and overall Excel functionality. The examples on the CD ROM provide a way to learn with concrete examples. These sample code modules can be modified and there are so many worthwhile code snippets that the price of the book is well worth it on code samples alone. The new book for Excel 2000 takes advantage of the new VBA in Excel 97 and 2000 and it follows with the same easy to use format and explanation of concepts as the previous one. Because of this book, I have been able to work as a consultant and instructor in Excel programming - it is that well written. If you want to learn more about making Excel 97/2000 work the way you work, then you MUST get this book !

4.0 out of 5 stars It is a good reference to Excel 2000 VBA, 6 Sep 1999
By A Customer
I was a little underwelmed by the content of this book after having read all of the other reviews posted. With MS now incorporating OLAP into Excel 2000 I had really hoped to find "anything" in this book that would have offered some extra knowledge on the subject. But no, nothing was there. So if you are looking for a general reference to the Excel OM and some VBA procedures, then this is the book for you. However if you are looking for a real book that dives into Excel in all of it's glory then I would recomend Que's book on Excel 2000. Although there is only limited programming information in it, the book does truly highlight the new advantages of Excel 2K.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but I was expecting better, 9 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Having heard so much about the previous version for XL95, I was somewhat disappointed with this book. Although the content is generally excellent, especially the case studies, I was surprised to find several technical errors, and almost no discussion of database access
