5.0 out of 5 stars Great intro to the subject for total novices, 5 Jul 2000
By A Customer
Before reading this I knew literally nothing about computer programming, but this book really helped me to start to learn about it, although obviously it only touches on the fringes of an enormous subject.

The book is focussed on QBASIC, which can be found on the Windows CD ROM so nothing is required really. It covers really simple stuff: how to get stuff onto the screen, using variables, doing maths, arrays and sorting data.

On top of this it introduces HTML and other web stuff, plus snippets of other languages so you get a feel for them as well. Wang also provides some hints about where to go from here with the knowledge picked up in this book - resources for using other more practical languages. You aren't going to learn enough here to change the world, but it might inspire you to take the next step.

The downside of the book is the writer's 'sense of humour' (the guy thinks he is a wit - he is misguided) which definitely gets on your nerves after a while!

4.0 out of 5 stars More theory than practice, 20 Aug 2008
By S. Bentley "stuarthoratiobentley" (North Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
In a misguided attempt to teach myself a bit of programming I bought a book on C#. After ten pages of code that meant nothing to me and no idea how it was meant to work (did I type it into a txt file or what?), I gave up.

Then I saw this book. Now, don't get me wrong, by the end of the book I'm still not ready to start putting together programs, but at least I understand what is underlying the whole thing.

The book guides you through the principles behind programming, things like variables and strings, giving you an idea of how the elements interact. It also explains about editors, compilers and interpreters, even if the disc included isn't too useful this way. It also gives you prompts about the different computer languages and the trade-offs you would make by choosing to write programs in a particular language.

In some ways, the narrative is a little scattershot. There will be sudden digressions about certain styles of language and how you would have to do something different in each of them, without any worked examples. However there are a number of simple programs included.

Ultimately, I now feel more confident about programming because I can see why code is constructed the way it is. I don't know particularly how to write anything, but that's the next step!

4.0 out of 5 stars Especially useful for anyone wqanting to use Liberty Basic, 13 Aug 2002
By Alan Sturgess - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
'Beginning programming for Dummies' (2nd edition) is both light-hearted and extremely informative. Although the author takes rather a long time to get round to exploring LIBERTY BASIC, the wait is well worth it. As anyone who uses 'Liberty' knows, there is no easily down-loadable manual apart from a massive .pdf file but this book serves its function of taking you carefully through all the earlist stages of learning to program in BASIC. By using 'Beginning programming' in conjunction with the Helpfile and Tutorials built into 'Liberty', you should have no problems making rapid progress.

Wallace Wang points out that by the time you read his book, a new, updated version of 'Liberty' may be available. (He provides you with the URL). This is true as Liberty Basic 3.01 is now available for download.

As someone who used to write programs in BASIC for the old Acorn 'BBC' machines and who now wants to use BASIC to program for Windows - this book seems to be an ideal way forwards. I recommend it to you .... but do make sure that you get the 2nd edition as the 1st edition focused on QBasic!
