1.0 out of 5 stars not recomended, 27 May 2001
I bought this book because I was fed up with my microsoft's ME constantly' playing up'. It looked like a good deal-an instruction book with the linux o/s and loads of extras thrown in.I am new to linux(but not to computing) so I put all my faith and trust into this book. The first problem was that the contents of the CD and book didn't match. The dialog box(fig 3.8 page 36)setting up your networking didn't show up during boot up, the linuxconfig dialog box couldn't be found (with out out it you can't do anything!)I couldn't log on as 'root'(the user who can make the adjustments permanent)I ran the whole set up 4 times to try and get it to accept me as root(this takes a very long time. The set up dialog boxes kept on ceasing & you didn't know what was going to happen next. I got the impression that the book was a rush-job (maybe for an earlier version of the red hat & not properly adjusted for the 7 ) I was faced with the fact that I would have to adjust or rearrange the hardware inside the tower, so that linux could find and use it. Over all the book isn't helpful & is contradictory.Microsoft's ME seems alot easier to get a long with and is far more user friendly-at least it can find all of the hardware and use it!Leave the book collecting dust on amazon's shelves and make life easier for your selves-don't waste your money(hard earnt) on this amateurish mess !This book deserves no stars-microsoft can sleep easy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The easiest way to forge forward if Linux is new to you!, 21 Feb 2001
By A Customer
I decided to debble into the world of LINUX for both server but mainly workstation use. I have to admit, LINUX with all it's releases can present some minor if not even major headaches for the newcomer to this O/S. I found this book an excellent source of information for helping those new to the LINUX O/S overcome those issues that are not well documented with the normal releases. This book focusess on the basics, intermediates and fundimentals, right from partioning to X-Configuration and connecting to the Internet via Dialup. The book is so much more than a 'how-to'. It also features the history of the O/S which most will find quite interesting. The humour is incredible and another big bonus is the pull-out cheat-sheet. Although it ships with the Red Hat distribution, the commands are generic LINUX orientated and those 'Red Hat specific' commands are noted. It makes installation easy including some pre-checks that most computer amateurs and novices would simply overlook if they wanted to migrate to LINUX. It helps overcome those little obstacles that make most Windows users re-load Windows 9x back onto their computers after installation failures. This book removes the guesswork! The command indexes are great, the screen snapshots and general diagrams make it a pleasure to read as well as a mine of general information. For a beginner or newcomer to LINUX, I strongly recommend the LINUX for Dummies. I found the general content, pace and layout of the manual exceptional. Personally, I reckon this publication is money well spent! Remember this book is for absoloute newcomers and even the more seasoned LINUX user may find it of some use!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better., 21 May 2001
My basic opinion about this book is that it is very good. Why only three stars? The author, while very concise and pedagogical, spends a fair amount of time telling the reader what the book does not cover. It can be agreed that Linux is a complicated subject, particularly for a beginner. However, there are some topics that are either lacking in enough detail (basic firewall design that can be understood by a beginner, not just copying a script or two) or are not included in the book at all (What kind of hardware do I need if I have a computer that RedHat Linux will run on, but am lacking ______ ? This could be a modem, an ethernet card, ADSL, ISDN, etc.).
