2.0 out of 5 stars Low quality book, 5 Nov 2005
I bought this thinking that it would guide me into writing Linux programs. After reading the first few pages I realised this book was focused on using the shell rather than writing shell scripts, although there are a few examples. The more important programs in shell scripts are grep, sed, awk, head, tail etc., however, there's hardly a glimpse of how to use regular expressions with grep/sed, what a disappointment. If you want to get started with Linux programming either get a book on bash/csh scripting or UNIX programming. If you know nothing at all about GNU/Linux then this book might be of interest.

1.0 out of 5 stars linux for dummies - NOT, 12 Jul 2002
As someone who is very new to linux, I was told by more than one person that if you have no knowledge, any help was good help. Absolute rubbish. This book mentions lots of stuff, but it is either too superficial or too obscure. The basic bits that you need to get started/up & running don't tell you enough, the bits that seem detailed are the kind of bits that you will probably not use in the early stages anyway. The author(s) try to explain linux in a helpful and basic manner, but I felt it came across as quite patronising. The book comes with a copy of red hat 7.1 which as an out dated version of the redhat system wasn't much use. Not that I could get it installed anyway!

I understand that the dummies range of books has quite a reasonable reputation. If they want to retain that, I feel that they should withdraw and pulp this one. Perhaps re-write it so new users understand how to use command line input, file system, KDE, gnome, ppp and how to interpret on-line HOWTO documents (there are thousands of them available but they, like the book presume too much prior knowledge/written by people who can't always get the info across in a clear/concise manner).

My vote says don't waste your money!
