Amazon.co.uk Review
With Dreamweaver 3 and Dreamweaver 3 for Dummies, there is no excuse for not updating your Web site! First, it provides a good foundation in site design. Dreamweaver outshines competing applications by offering both a WYSIWYG tool (What You See Is What You Get) and a powerful HTML text editor. While the book explores many aspects of the application, it also surveys the basics of HTML, giving readers a broader knowledge of how Web pages work.

For users who created their sites using another Web authoring application, the author dedicates a chapter to common conversion problems to Macromedia's software. Users starting from scratch will find an extensive chapter on site planning, such as deciding functionality goals and targeting your audience.

The book begins with a review of the work environment; then it's on to creating a site and working with the site management tools. Efficiently working with Dreamweaver requires a thorough understanding of features like Templates, the Library, Tracing Image and History palette. This Dummies guide does a good job of showing not only how to use these, but why they are important in optimising the creation and maintenance of your site.

This books also features a section on creating images with Fireworks 3 and using them within Dreamweaver. Dynamic HTML, layers and behaviours are covered, including more advanced uses of these features in timeline animations. Adding multimedia like Shockwave or Flash movies, or including Java or ActiveX, may exceed early aspirations for readers of this book, yet the guide clearly explains the many options offered for implementing these enhancements.

The book concludes by analysing sites created with Dreamweaver and offers some design and time-saving tips (including a list of online resources). The CD-ROM holds trial versions of the software plus numerous plug-ins such as HTML Rename!, a filename conversion program useful for cross-platform work. You'll also find extra behaviours and templates, sample images and Flash files, to supplement the learning process and a glossary of Web and Dreamweaver lingo useful for beginners. --Angelynn Grant, amazon.com

Topics covered: Basic instruction on using Dreamweaver 3 including creating a site, pages, formatting text, placing images, making links, working with tables, forms, frames, DHTML and plug-ins; creating graphics in Fireworks 3 and integrating them in Dreamweaver. CD-ROM includes 30-day trial versions of Dreamweaver 3 and Fireworks 3, HTML Rename!, demo versions of companion software like BBEdit Lite 4.6 and the latest browsers, extra Dreamweaver behaviours and templates and sample images and Flash animations.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this book like the plague!!, 8 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I realise now i cant be a dummy as this book made no sense to me at all!... The layout is awful (as stated by other reviewers) and jumps all over the place. I am used to PC's/Internet and most graphics packages so i was thinking DW would come easily with this book but no! this book almost put me off the program altogether as after the first week i gave up and put it to one side and just carried on experimenting. All i needed was a set of tutorials walking me through the basic page layout, templates, backgrounds etc but the book has nothing like that...lots of hints and tips but no "lessons"!. If i was to read it from cover to cover and memorise it all i would probably have my answers but as the author stresses the book is layed out in a way that you shouldnt have to do this!!...big disappointment....i wont be wasting anymore money - im gonna buy the Dreamweaver Bible instead! YOU WOULD BE A DUMMY TO BUY THIS BOOK!

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth it - but it was the cheapest book on Dreamweaver 3, 12 Dec 2000

This book does cover almost everything you need to know about Dreamweaver 3 and constructing websites. However, it seems to be written in an almost random order. It starts with uploading your site (which you haven't made), then goes on about checking your code (which you haven't written), then about HTML (I bought Dreamweaver to avoid it!), then over half way throught the book how to build a website. Read it in reverse and it's an excellent book.

1.0 out of 5 stars it sucks !, 7 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I didn't learn much with this book, although it covers every subject. It's so confusing... I kept going back and forth most of the time to find basic solutions. It was definately not written for beginners. Too much garbage too repetitive, not very objective, that is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent buy! Don't leave home without it!
Dreamweaver 3 is said to be quite a heavyweight package but this book certainly lightens the load. It does take a rather simplistic approach.. Read more
