Product Description

Product Description
UNIX has been evolving feverishly for close to 30 years, sort of like bacteria in a cesspool – only not as attractive. As a result, many different varieties of UNIX have existed along the way. Although they all share numerous characteristics, they differ just enough that even experienced users are tripped up by the differences between versions.

If you’re like most UNIX users, a zealot stopped at your desk, connected your terminal or workstation, gave you five minutes of incomprehensible advice, demonstrated a few bizarre games (like roaches that hide behind the work on your screen), and disappeared. Now you’re on your own.

Don’t worry. UNIX For Dummies, 4th Edition, cuts through all the technojargon lurking in the UNIX command jungle to deliver clear instructions just how and when you need them. This indispensable reference includes sections on

  • Typing commands
  • Copying, renaming, and deleting files
  • Printing files
  • Finding where your file went
  • Using the Internet from UNIX
  • Connecting and communicating with people on other computers

Discover how to get your UNIX system′s attention, persuade it that you are allowed to use it, and even accomplish something useful as you find out how to

  • Choose the right flavor of UNIX for you
  • Set up and operate UNIX terminals
  • Manage files, directories, and printing
  • Use the Common Desktop Environment and other window systems
  • Browse the Web, send and receive e–mail, and read Usenet newsgroups
  • Deal with all the major versions of UNIX, including Berkeley UNIX, Solaris, and SunOS
  • Troubleshoot and solve common problems

The expert writing team of John Levin and Margaret Levin Young also give you a look at the latest developments with Linux, the wildly popular, completely free version of UNIX – all in a single volume designed to put you in command with a computer system that can be tamed.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good buy for the beginner, 15 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Anyone with a modicum of experience in using UNIX will undoubtedly find this book a waste of time. However, for the rest of us 'dummies' this is an entertaining look at the basics (very basic) of the operating system. OK, within a couple of months of using UNIX I found its usefulness waning, but I still make reference to it from time to time - and no doubt will continue to do so. A good buy for the beginner - like me !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful book with a lamen approach in teaching a user on Unix, 17 Jul 1999
By A Customer
Getting to grips with Unix for the first time is a daunting prospect, more so as I have come from a VMS background!! The book proved to be useful in teaching the basics of Unix without dropping me in the deep end from the word go. I will always keep this book on my desk as I will no doubt be refering to it in the months to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Decent book, 12 May 2006
By Sam Morton (Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
Ok guys this book isn't bad. It is very descriptive and well written. The problem is there's much of water, long blah-blah-blah and so on. It takes too long to start and then looOOoong leaps from one real problem to another. But it is "for dummy" book it supposed to be like that with all explanations back to the beginning.
I have found training DVD "UNIX Essentials" by UnixAcademy that nobody knows about. I found this DVD on Amazon.com but since they do not ship outside US I ordered it directly from CustomFlix.com. It is very cool one, straight to the subject, very useful. I coupled this book with DVD and I believe I learned more then my friend who attended $2000 class.
This book is good , but DVD is DVD, it is like you have class at home. This book is very useful though. When you start with UNIX it is like starting with violin:you have to practice every day and this book paired with the DVD gives much of what you will ever need.

4.0 out of 5 stars An very good introduction to using Unix.
This book does not go into detail into Unix at all, and for that it has earned criticism shared by many of the Dummy books. Read more
