1.0 out of 5 stars Be smart: don't buy this "For Dummies" book, 9 Sep 2002
By P. Tillson "Alien Stunt Ferret" (Derby, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Networking for Dummies (Paperback)
If you want to become even half proficient in networking, don't but this book. It lacks structure and is full of patronising rubbish, and pathetic attempts at humour, which quickly become bloody irritating. Much better to spend your money on something that does the job like :-
1. Teach Yourself Networking in 24 Hours, by Matt Hayden
2. Networking: A beginner's Guide, by Bruce Hallberg
3. Networking Essentials Plus 3rd edition, by Microsoft Press
4. Networking+ Study Guide, by David Groth

3.0 out of 5 stars Very very basic, 25 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Wow, perhaps the title says it all. If you need to know how to connect to a network *printer* this book might be the one for you. I build web sites and want to learn more about the backend, hardware side of things. Our network guys suggested that I learn about different kind of networks, OSI model and protocols. For that, I recommend "Teach Yourself Networking Visually" by maran graphics. The "Dummies" book is not what I needed. It's probably ideal for extreme novices.

1.0 out of 5 stars Full of cut-and-paste rubbish from other Dummies books, 13 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Networking for Dummies (Paperback)
I bought this book because I wanted to learn about networking.

The book has no clear structure .... it's all over the place (is this supposed to be the "fun" part of the Dummies books ?)

The book is crammed full of material that is "peripheral" at best (if i wanted a book on "e-mail" I would have bought one). I get the sense that someone sits down with a word processor, writes a few pages about networking and then does a cut-and-paste job from other Dummies computer books to fill pages.

By "Dummies" do they mean "people who wouldn't understand a clear explaination of something so we better leave it unclear or hanging" ?

All I wanted was a book that would give me a clear understanding of networking basics. For example setting up a home network ... the book tells you little about how to configure TCP/IP settings in Win 9x ... how can you set up a TCP/IP home network without knowing this ????

If your new to networking and want to know the basics, dont buy this book. I'm looking for another.
