1.0 out of 5 stars Wacky Americanism Strikes Again, 9 Jun 2004
It's not particularly helpful when you pick up a technical helpbook and it's Index points you to chapters with titles such as "Textual Healing" and "Ain't Misbehavin'". What do these mean? What information lies therein? Well, do not get too excited because the 'fun' and 'wacky' way in which this book's language tackles the technical DHTML platform is neither readable nor helpful. It's typical of this whole series to aim at geeky Trekkies who call there children things like 7 of 9 and Kirk. The American points of reference are not helpful for any Anglophile either. Describing the difference between two browsers, Hyman (what a name!) postulates:"at this point you may be saying...'I thought Internet Explorer 5.0 and navigator 4.5 were as similar as cherry ice cream and corn chowder.'" What does this mean? What have browsers got to do with this? and what on God's Earth is chowder? In fact, at that point I had already given up any hope of finding a readable, well-informed document, and realised the irony was that the only person who would indeed buy this book was a dummy. Steer clear.

3.0 out of 5 stars The fun and easy way to start, 23 Oct 2002

And now you may think that programs that do it all for you would be easier to start with. However if you do not have a basic idea of how Dynamic HTML works you will not be able to answer the questions on what to do. This book goes from the fundamentals to building a practical website. Unfortunately it does not show how to mail "form" information back to you from the website. There are a lot of practical examples but this book is somewhat dated. The book is also geared to Apache server and UNIX concepts therefore it should work on 90 percent of the web sites that you encounter. The code is also more transportable because of this.

You need to check with your potential I.S.P. to see if they're using Internet information services (ISS) if so this book may be of little use because it is proprietary and uses a weird syntax.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but a little confusing., 14 Oct 1998
By A Customer
Dynamic HTML for Dummies is a good book in that it covers all many of the Dynamic HTML features, but it assumes you know some extent of a scripting language, by randomly introducing new operators in the scripts with no explanation whatsoever. Overall, however, this book is a good introduction to DHTML.
