Product Description

When Lady Constance Morrow finds herself held against her will aboard a ship bound for the American colonies--a ship filled with "tobacco brides" and felons--she is quite sure that as soon as she arrives she will find a reasonable man who will believe her father is an earl and send her back on the next ship to England. Instead she meets Drew O'Connor, a determined Colonial farmer who is nearly as headstrong as she is. Drew wins Constance as his bride but soon realizes he has taken on much more than he bargained for

5.0 out of 5 stars A Well Researched Historical!, 13 Mar 2006
By Kristi Ahlers (Illinois) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Lady Constance Morrow, daughter of Earl Greyham has found herself on board a convict ship sailing for Virginia without chaperone or papers detailing who she is, so when they dock in the colonies she is shocked and not very happy to find out she is going to be sold for Tobacco. If that is not insult enough she has been won in a card game and her new master is not what she’s expecting. She’s expecting to get her life back once she speaks with the governor. She’s about to find out life in the colonies is much different from England

Drew O’Conner knows that only the strong survive in the new world. He has lost the love of his life and he is not interested in marrying…ever. So when he is the reluctant winner of Constance, he brings her to his home only to find out she can’t cook, how to keep house and has a sassy argumentative mouth. And she’s has red hair and freckles! But some how these two very different people learn to appreciate each other and a marriage of convenience is more then they ever thought it could be.

Ms. Gist is a wonderful addition to the inspirational romance genre. Her story is full of heart and emotion. Drew and Constance were engaging characters and their romance is truly a superb read. Ms. Gist has done her research for time period and as a result the reader will feel transported to the Virginia colony. This is one author I highly recommend and one I look forward to reading in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great light hearted historical romance with christian values, 17 Oct 2009

This was the first book I read by Deeanne Gist but I saw a review on a blog so thought I would give it a try. I'm very glad I did. Ok, its not deep and meaningful but that's not what it sets out to be. This is a fun and light hearted romance and a very enjoyable read. I liked the historical detail, you get a real sense of what life was like for the colonists in the 17th century. It is good to read a story with christian characters, its not a "preachy" sort of book but the characters have clear morals and faith. The main characters are likeable but flawed and I wanted to read on and find out what happpens. No massive surprises in the storyline, it is a romance after all, but well written and an enjoyable read. I am now reading more of her books, there are 5 so far.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Read, 5 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Red-headed, spirited, mathamatically-minded Lady Constance finds herself kidnapped and transported to the American colonies. There she is sold as a bride to one man and won at a game of cards by another. Furious because she is surrounded by people who refuse to believe that she is the daughter of an earl and frustrated about being stuck in America because no ships are sailing for England before the winter, Constance is forced by colonial convention into marriage with Drew - a local tabacco farmer. Drew won Constance playing cards, but he is still fighting for control over his life and mourning the death of his sweetheart, so he has no desire to marry anyone - least of all a red-headed spit-fire who would rather be working out maths problems then having anything to do with him. Neither of them want to spend the rest of their lives together, so the deal is that Drew and Constance will go through a marriage ceremony for the sake of convention, but be married in name only and then get a divorce in the spring so that Constance can return to England. Both of them are convinced that this is what God wants them to do ...
'A Bride Most Begrudging' goes on from there. I felt that the exciting first couple of chapters - detailing Constance's kidnapping and arrival in America - were the best of the entire book. Once Drew and Constance are married the whole plot is tightly focused on whether they will fall in love and live happily-ever-after ... or not. While it is certainly well-written and gripping, the story is predictable and the romance scenes are frequent and detailed - leaving little to the imagination. There is a supporting cast of appealing and interesting characters, but that's all they - a supporting cast to Drew and Constance. I found that frustrating, because I wanted to know more about Josh, Mary and Sally. Perhaps the best thing about 'A Bride Most Begrudging' is the fact that both Drew and Constance are committed Christians and during the course of the story they both have to come to the position of being able to aceept that God has plans for them that may not be the same as their plans. Taken as a whole, however, I won't be reading this book again and would hesitate to recommend it to anyone else.
