4.0 out of 5 stars Useful pocket grammar guide, 3 Nov 2002
If you want a handy pocket Japanese grammar guide, I would recommend this book highly. I don't think it's that useful as your *only* grammar book, since its coverage is wide rather than deep - this is prehaps unavoidable in a book so small.

My biggest problem with it is that with the exception of the first section describing the japanese writing system the book is entirely in romaji, without any kana or kanji. IMO, it would have been much improved by the addition of Japanese text with furigana. It also (like many Japanese books for english speakers) decides that using the Japanese names for the two basic classes of verbs (godan and ichidan) would be too confusing, and makes up it's own names for them.

Overall, it's well worth the price, and useful to keep in your pocket.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 2 May 2001
By A Customer
If you're a beginner or an intermediate student, this book will prove to be an excellent reference for Japanese grammar. This book works best as a companion book when studying Japanese, but will also work well as a reference book to bring with you on your journey as it's small enough to fit in your pocket. It's well worth it's price!

5.0 out of 5 stars no script at all !, 20 Feb 2009
By Richard Almasi "TheHunn" (Europa) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This small and inexpensive little book is one of the best purchases I have made.

Why beginner's should use this:

1. no script to confuse you: everything is in English and romanization

2. excellent examples for each concept

3. clear explanations of the jargon used: it includes linguistic-jargon but the jargon is actually explained ! For example, it explains what 'accusative' means before they use it in examples

4. when they translate the romanized parts into english they include the "word-order" translations: for example the sentence 'Ban gohan o tabemashoo ka ?' is translated "properly" like 'Shall we eat dinner?' and also in "word-order" form like 'dinner shall we eat?"

This is what a grammar book should be like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good.
A pocket book which contains all the Japanese grammar. It's well laid-out , very clear and 'roomy' (no cramped chart or writings).
Simply perfect.
