I bought this book from Amazon after reading that it contained information on how to train your hamster to do a variety of tricks, including teaching them to roll on a rubber ball. I had visions of my hamsters rolling around and performing tricks - my very own hamster circus! I was however, quite disappointed with it.

One of the tricks you can 'train' your hamster to do is come to you when you call it. This involves tapping the side of the cage or whistling until it comes over to you. In my opinion, this is not training a hamster. Hamsters do this anyway!

The section of the book entitled Fun Time sounded promising, but again I was disappointed to find it basically said go to the pet shop and buy your hamster lots of toys, then put them on the floor and let your hamster play with them. Those of you who already own hamsters will know that they tend not to like playing with shop bought toys in this way, prefering instead to chew the carpet, escape behind the sofa or climb over the side of the play pen.

As for balancing on a ball - this isn't even mentioned in the book!!! (Unless of course that page was missing from my copy)

One good point about the book is that it serves well as a hamster care book, tells you how to choose a hamster, buy a nice cage, what bedding to use etc. Ideal for those thinking about buying a hamster as a pet for the first time. I have therefore rated this book with 3 stars as a hamster care book.

If you already are an experienced hamster owner, hoping for a guide to tell you how to train your hamster to do a variety of tricks to impress your friends with, I advise you to steer clear.
