Product Description

Synopsis

Addressing students in nine informal-lecture-like chapters, Sompayrac (retired, molecular, cellular, and developmental biology, U. of Colorado, Boulder) discusses the properties of viruses using an instruction strategy distinguished from conventional approaches, which focus mainly on the cells that viruses inhabit, rather than the viruses themselve

5.0 out of 5 stars Virus's and disease, 8 Nov 2009
By Finbarr J. Smyth (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had been struggling in my exams to answer a topic on a particular Virus,
What I could find online was either to jargon filled or just too basic.

Then I came across this book on a website somewhere, and decided to purchase it
It is excellent!!! I used this book rather than my medical texts to answer the questions in my exam, and am happy to say I achieved straight A grades.

It explains a complex topic in a simple and clear manner, not in childish nor techno speak, its just right, it gives the information needed.

Wanna know how Swine flu virus infects us?
the answer is here.

An excellent publication

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for Newbies, 10 Jan 2008
This is a slim volume - only 108 pages, plus another seven for the short glossary and index. However, it explains the subject well in an entertaining way with helpful diagrams.

Expect some essential jargon that is initially challenging. But after the first few pages things become clearer because Professor Sompayrac realises the importance of repetition and summary as aids to memory and understanding. Here we have a sympathetic author who appreciates that not all his readers will be experts.

The viruses discussed are familiar ones like: influenza, rhinovirus, measles, hepatitis a, b & c and HIV-1 etc., and the information is presented as a series of nine 'lectures', each summarised at the end. So, if you get lost, your mind is refocused on the salient points - an approach I found effective.

I can strongly recommend this book, especially to lay people like myself whose knowledge of microorganisms was never taken further than O-Level biology many years ago. By the end of the book you will have an enhanced understanding of the nature of viruses: how they enter our bodies, replicate and escape to infect others - each in its own fascinating manner - whilst constantly seeking to outfox our native immune systems, something that many viruses are horrifyingly skilled at.

I guarantee you will be awestruck, never mind, perhaps, even more attentive to basic hygiene.

All in all HOW PATHOGENIC VIRUSES WORK is absorbing for the eternally curious, no less those determined to stay 'well' for as long as possible.
