Here, Leonard S Marcus interviews writers of fantasy, generally children's fantasy. The authors interviewed include some major names, as well as some I've never heard of: Lloyd Alexander, Franny Billinglsey, Susan Cooper, Nancy Farmer, Brian Jacques, Diana Wynne Jones, Ursula K Le Guin, Madeleine L'Engle, Garth Nix, Tamora Pierce, Terry Pratchett, Philip Pullman and Jane Yolen.
Marcus starts each interview by asking "What kind of child were you?" His interest is in what made each person into a writer -- were there storytellers in the family, did a particular teacher offer encouragement, and so on -- as well as whether they have a daily routine and what it is. (There are photos of the work-areas of a few of the authors, and of actual manuscript pages, which are interesting.) If the author is old enough, he asks what impact the Second World War had on them. He rounds off by asking if they have any advice for young writers, and "What is the best part of being a writer?"
It's the life stories of the writers that really come across as the interesting part of these interviews. Some come from literary backgrounds, some don't. Some started writing straightaway, others had to come to a moment of realisation: "Of course, I'm a writer!"
Aimed at children, I'd guess, but certainly readable by interested adults.
