5.0 out of 5 stars Both before and during the trip, this book was our bible!!!, 22 Aug 1998
By A Customer
Cynthia Harriman's Take Your Kids to Europe was incredibly help to us in preparing for our recent trip to Europe. Ms. Harriman reassured us in our decision to spend three weeks in Spain, France and Italy with our 9 and 5 year olds (along with another family with similar age children) by sharing some very concrete reasons on the whys and hows to really spend time "experiencing" this magnificent continent. Her list of things to take, things to do beforehand, things to see while there, and ways to deal with some of the day-to-day occurences were very insightful and proved extremely helpful. She referred us to other books that were excellent resources on hotels, restaurants (Rick Steves' Italy 1998 and the Mona Winks series) which made our sightseeing fun and funny!!! We very much appreciate her many suggestions on some of "off the beaten track" places to visit and ways to discover Europe through the eyes of our children. Thank you Cynthia for this wonderful resource!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some useful information but not geared for the typical famil, 3 Feb 1998
By A Customer
While there was useful information in the book, I found several major drawbacks. The author targets families with extended periods of time to spend in Europe (her family went for 4 months) so much of the discussion is on home rentals, car purchase/repurchase etc and many of the activities they enjoyed reflected the extended period of time they had to spend. While it would be wonderful to have that amount of time, I don't think it is realistic for most families. It is important to note that the book is also geared to families with school age children (you have to read in a few pages to find that out.) No help here if you want to take a preschooler. Third, the author's family doesn't really care for cities so major cities such as Paris and London get only short mentions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for families traveling abroad., 29 Jul 1999
By A Customer
A great source of advice on traveling sanely with kids and good references to other resources on traveling in Europe. As expats living in London, we have used this book both for ideas on what to do in England and on our trips to the continent. Be sure to check out suggestions from other readers (short-listed in the book) as additional ideas to the ones the authors discuss in detail - we've tried a couple of these and found them worthwhile. Good advice on strategies for coping with being together for long stretches on the road, and how to be understanding of the different expectations everyone has of any big vacation, even if it's shorter than the Harrimans' extended trip.
