2.0 out of 5 stars This book suggests an education in design is NOT necessary., 14 Dec 1997

As a professional interior designer who is now ready to start my own business, I found this book of little use. The author seems to think anyone can become an interior designer just by reading this one book. I strongly disagree.

2.0 out of 5 stars NOT an Interior Design book!!, 18 April 2007

(REAL NAME)
I was quite annoyed with this book. Yes, it does offer some very valuable information about how to set up your business, organise yourself and negotiate contracts with clients and suppliers. Make no mistake though, this is NOT an Interior Design book.

The author deals only with Interior Decoration issues, such as how to measure windows and present fabrics/blinds/carpets to a client during a home visit. There is no mention of presenting elevations, sample boards or any of the more challenging aspects of Interior Design such as subcontracting builders to change internal layouts.

The author completely mixes up the two professions. To quote from the beginning of the book: "A decorator is usually what you call yourself when just starting out in business. You have the same responsibilites as a designer, but not the title. (...) A designer is a decorator who is certified by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). (...) A decorator is just as well received in the public eye as a designer is. This change has come about recently, and quite frankly, the only people who know the difference between a designer and a decorator are the people working in the field."

As a certified Interior Designer, I keep coming up against this attitude propagated by the author. No wonder that legislation has really tightened up in the US to protect Interior Designers versus unqualified decorators.

So if you want info on how to sell fabrics etc from your home, this book is perfect for you. If you want to know how to set up a professional Interior Design practice, forget it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy and simple to understand., 28 Feb 2001

Every interior design newcomer should read this book. It gives very useful information about marketing any new business together with tips for dealing with business forms and legal documents.

Whilst this book is obviously aimed at the American market it can be easily adapted for any UK based business.
