I purchased this book on the recommendation of a colleague, and I admit that my experiences with the genre of ethnography had rendered my expectations rather low. To my astonishment, I found myself reading well into the night, only to wake in the wee hours and discover I had fallen asleep with the light on. Markham's experiences online are riveting, humorous, and (sometimes) rather peculiar -- the insight she brings to bear on those experiences is alone worth the price of the book; indeed, "Life Online" is to be recommended to anyone concerned with issues of private and public selves in the age of computer-generated understandings -- which is it say, all of us.
