`This second edition, which has also been edited by Samson Katz, utilizes around half of the original text, of which a significant portions has been revised and updated. The fully revised and updated edition of this bestselling collection combines academic research with professional and personal reflections. Death, Dying and Bereavement addresses both the practical and the more metaphysical aspects of death. Topics such as new methods of pain relief, guidelines for breaking bad news, and current attitudes to euthanasia are considered, while the mystery of death

and its wider implications are also explored.

A highly distinctive interdisciplinary approach is adopted, including perspectives from literature, theology, sociology and psychology. There are wide-ranging contributions from those who come into professional contact with death and bereavement - doctors, nurses, social workers and councellors. In addition there are more intimate personal accounts from carers and from bereaved people.

Death, Dying and Bereavement is the Course Reader for The Open University course Death and Dying, which is offered as part of The Open University Dilpoma in Health and Social Welfare.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just an Open University course reader, 24 Jul 2001
By revnick@cableinet.co.uk (South Shields, Tyne and Wear) - See all my reviews
I would not have read this book if I had not been required to do so by the Open University course which I am studying. But you do not have to do the course to read this book. It is an anthology of short articles and extracts from other books on the themes in the book's title. The book can be 'dipped-into' at random. The book contains articles from people like the very courageous columnist John Diamond, about his diagnosis and consequent outlook on the little life he had left to live. Some of the articles contain information from factual or medical viewpoints, many of the articles are personal accounts and can be very moving to read. One such is the extract from 'Tuesday with Morrie' by Mitch Albom. Having read this I ordered the book straight away as I had to read the full story. This book will help the reader to understand death, dying and bereavement a little more through the experiences(often painful)of others. Anyone who is going to die, is dying or has experienced bereavement in their life should read this book. That just about includes everyone. I highly recommend it.
