Product Description

Product Description

`Brian Thorne has arguably become the UK's leading authority on Carl Rogers and his work, gaining this reputation by producing books which ooze many of the qualaties that Rogers himslef espoused - frankness, clarity, sensivity, insightfullness, thoroughness, humility and genorosity of spirit. This book will not disappoint the reader on any of these fronts.

I would defy any person-centred practitioner to read it without, at various times, learning something new, being moved, inspired, challenged and entertained' - Ipnosis

As founder of the person-centred approach, Carl Rogers (1902-1987) is arguably the most influential psychologist and psychotherapist of the 20th century. Providing unique insights into his life and a clear explanation of his major theoretical ideas, this book offers an accessible introduction for all practitioners and students of the person-centred approach.

Written by Brian Thorne, leading person-centred practitioner and bestselling author, the Second Edition explores the continuing influence of Rogers since his death and the development of person-centred therapy internationally.

Drawing on his experience of having known and worked with Rogers, Brian Thorne beautifully captures the way in which Rogers worked with clients and from that, draws out the practical implications of what is, in effect, a functional philosophy of human growth and relationships.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Person Centred Counselling, 28 May 2001
By A Customer
Thorne's book Carl Rogers, is part biography and part discussion on the nature of person centred counselling.

The book is easy to follow and is particulary well written when Thorne's writes about the Core Conditions, which are the fundamental elements to Rogers' work. The biographical part of the book is superficial and rather unctuous and I find find Thorne's comparison of Rogers' work to those of Christian writers off-putting. A better biography of Rogers, is Carl Rogers by David Cohen.

Whilst this is a book worth reading I think there are better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book, 15 Feb 2009
This was an interesting book giving an overview of the historical development, principles and criticisms of Person Centred Counselling model. It details the processes that Rogers went through in developing his model. A bit rambling at points. My only criticism would be that (as Christian minister myself) I felt the rebuttals of the the criticisms of the model from Christian worldview were very weak and unconvincing - it felt as if the author had picked two theological topics (original righteousness & deification) which he thought rebutted the criticisms without actually thinking through if they did. Personally I am not sure if those two theological topics are an adequate rebuttal of the Christian criticisms of the model. If you are looking for a more in depth discussion of the criticisms of the model by Christianity then look elsewhere. Overall, though a good introduction to how the Person Centred Counselling model came about.
