Product Description

Review

"The authors write from the position of the ideal mentor, presenting the issues doctoral students would like their chairpersons to discuss with them, yet rarely have done. Additionally, the student perspective is integrated into the text through numerous examples from a wide range of disciplines."

(Marilyn M. Irwin The Library Quarterly )

"This book was my bible going through my dissertation. The authors’ clarity of writing and comprehensive thought allowed me to easily take the principles off the pages and put them into practice. I highly recommend it!"

(Dennis S. Reina, Ph.D. )

"A must for anyone considering graduate school. While the entire book is extremely helpful, the author's frequent use of charts, tables, lists and questions is an especially effective method to organize and summarize information. This book is also a worthwhile resource for those crafting and writing a thesis or dissertation... a practical and well-designed work that I highly recommend."

(Ellen Nagy NACADA Journal )

Product Description

`This gem of a book is truly a life saver to any doctoral student navigating the rough waters of the dissertation process. Drs Kjell Rudestam and Rae Newton take a usually convoluted process and map out a clear path that is easy to follow from start to finish. This book was my bible going through my dissertation. The authors' clarity of writing and comprehensive thought allowed me to easily take the principles off the pages and put them into practice. I highly recommend it!' - Dennis S Reina, PhD , Co-author of Trust & Betrayal in the Workplace

`An important resource guide for advising graduate students who may have feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, and dread. This book is also a must for doctoral advisors who have long wished for a compendium of down-to-earth wisdom about the dissertation process that could help graduate students get the most out of their doctoral experience' - David G. Behrs, Marymount University

`The authors write from the position of the ideal mentor, presenting the issues doctoral students would like their chairpersons to discuss with them, yet rarely have done. 5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!, 2 Feb 2006
After pondering over which book to select to help me write my dissertation I chose this one and I'm so glad that I did. Before reading this book I knew nothing about the various chapters you should include in your dissertation. This book teaches you alot about how to structure your work and with its detailed explanations allows you to become familiar with various terminology. Alongside reading this book I attended dissertation lectures offered by my degree institution. Because I had read this book I found it easy to relate to the information given by my tutor. I am still writing my dissertation and constantly refer back to this book. I am a drama degree student and feel that anyone studying any degree subject would find it very useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addresses students' concerns., 1 Feb 2002
By bearwrite@aol.com (Orange County, US) - See all my reviews
As someone who works privately with students, helping them with dissertations, I highly recommend this book. When students contact me in regard to assistance with their dissertation, I recommend that they buy this book and use it as a reference. The information contained in this book anticipates and answers the questions that students have about the dissertation process and the contents of each chapter. It is one of the most practical guides for writing a dissertation that I have come across.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can you embark on your journey without this roadmap?, 30 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Written for students about to embark on a masters thesis or doctoral dissertation this book, provides an overview of the research process, from the first step of choosing a suitable topic to the finished product. As the production of a research project or enquiry is similar, many elements of this book may also be considered useful for under-graduates preparing for completion of their course. The publishers also claim the text is suitable for professors for providing guidance to students. During the inevitable moments of panic when your tutor is fast asleep in bed and you are staring at a blank computer screen, turn to a copy of Surviving Your Dissertation for comfort and inspiration. Each chapter concludes with student's suggestions for completing the tasks previously outlined and you may find practical advice given by someone who has survived the journey before you. This book may help you to get started if you have a long way to go, help you to decide on the road to take, plan your route, and reach your destination.
