Interesting, but repetitive, 9 Sep 2000

Shogun: Total War is a tough game to master, and the guide promises much. It delivers on some parts of the promise, but unfortunately important sections seem to have been cut short, or written without much enthusiasm. The descriptions and evaluations of the units were useful, as they included tactics and a list of attributes such as Attack and Defence Factors, Morale Bonuses, etc. Likewise, the clan guide gave detailed information and tactics. However, the province guide was very repetitve, and was light on useful information. Much of the information provided is available in the game anyway, and for a section which takes up a large portion of the book I expected much, much more. But perhaps the biggest fault with the book is it's multiplayer section, which is all of 1 page long. Basically a copy of the manual, it gives no tactics, advice, help, or support. The single player game can only keep you occupied for so long, and multiplayer features are essential in almost every moderm game. Compared with, for instance, the Homeworld guide, this is a severe disappointment, and I expect more from a Prima Guide. The book is useful for a short time, but contains no information that can't be found in the game (if you play it long enough). If you're struggling with the game, buy it. But if you're expecting to read some earth-shattering insights, steer well clear...
