5.0 out of 5 stars Great book only if you've already known OO concept with C++, 27 May 2001
By A Customer
Firstly, this is a great introduction for the beginner/intermediate game programer to DirectX (not much about Direct3D since it's for isometric Game Programming purpose). The author explains everything in an easy to understand manner and the stucture of book is so easy to follow.

I especially appreciate his emphasis to the use of C++. Since most book writers don't seem to bother and only use non object-oriented way for illustration. The object-oriented paradigm has been implemented so wonderfully for this type of programming throughout the entire text.

I recommend this book for any programer whom are new to this subject (but not for C/C++ newbies), and intermediate game programmers.

Great book!

3.0 out of 5 stars A reasonable reference for isometric games, 29 May 2001
By A Customer
This is a reasonable reference on creating isometric tile based games with the emphasis on directx, but still allowing some leeway for other platforms. The meat of the book is given over to algolrithms used to get a isometric engine up and running.

Where the book falls down is it's lack of specifics about creating games themselves. While it happily tells you how to make a graphics engine it doesn't deal with how to make a strategy game or a game of any genre for that matter. Beyond a few vague references to 'fog of war' this book has nothing on creating a complete game. In this regard 'Real Time Strategy Game Programming' is a much better book.

Given that the world has shifted to 3d games this book becomes a bit of an idle curiosity. It is good in parts but won't provide a quick fix for anyone looking to build a game from scratch. Best used in tandem with another reference.

1.0 out of 5 stars Limited !, 6 Mar 2003
By A Customer
I have a lot of Win32 C/VC++ experience but limited experience with DirectX so I got this book.

The first few sections on general windows C SDK are old hat and a waste of time, you'll find this covered in any Windows 32 SDK book.

As for the DirectX sections, they are very general and not that helpful. It's more an introduction to general gaming/graphics techniques, these again can be found in most C SDK books.

Better information on introduction techniques to DirectX can be found searching on the 'net via Google !

Save your money, don't buy this book
