Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Advanced ABAP Programming for SAP covers the more difficult aspects of ABAP, the customisation and reporting language built into SAP R/3. This book assumes a basic familiarity with the ABAP language (formerly known as ABAP/4) and builds upon it, exposing the reader to ABAP's considerable customisation and transaction-handling power along the way.

Here you'll find lots of prose to back up the code. Typically, the authors (three SAP consultants) introduce a subject with an explanation, then present a short program that illustrates the concept in its most simple case. From there, they provide the reader with code and prose that address variations upon the standard case.

The authors also emphasise procedures, where appropriate. In their coverage of creating a domain in the Data Dictionary, for example, they provide a step-by-step procedure with screen shots from the SAP environment. The result: Advanced ABAP represents a good tutorial for those wanting to expand their ABAP skills beyond the essentials. Back it up with a reference, and you'll be ready to tackle complex assignments. --David Wall

Topics covered: Graphical user interface (GUI) elements, Function Modules, Business APIs (BAPIs), data, tables, views, transactions and transaction processing (includes information on the Screen Painter, the Menu Painter, screen loops and locking strategies).

3.0 out of 5 stars Number one in a field of one, 9 Aug 2000
I must say I found this book extremely useful when I found myself having to create a dialog program when I knew virtually nothing about screen painter etc. I've never seen another book that covers dialog programming in ABAP, so if that's what interests you, this is what you need. However, the copy I have is chock-full of errors (though perhaps it's an early edition. I didn't get it from Amazon). It comes across as not having been proof-read AT ALL. To clarify what other reviewers have said, calling this book "Advanced" is stretching a point - it's just that it's the follow-up to "Introduction to ABAP/4 Programming".

3.0 out of 5 stars will make you a good ABAPer but not a hardcore ABAPer, 16 Mar 2000

It is a good book on abap/4. But the topics are really not advanced in nature. I am working on abap nearly 4 years. A lot of hardcore problems are even not mentioned in this book. Like advanced usage of field symbol, dynamic determintion of the screen layout, advanced sql in ABAP. Overall it is a good book for junior abaper. but maybe you will be disappointed if you are a experienced ABAPer.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you read the last one, read this as well, 5 Sep 1999

The book provides a stepping stone for new ABAPers on most of the area that he/she may encounter. Certainly it has not cover all you need, but once you have the crue to do something, the rest are details (for you to find out ^-^).
