More than just a picture book of Harley Sportsters, 28 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I had feared that this would be a rather lightweight book but I was delighted to find a lot of useful information in its 128 pages. Much written about H-D is pure hype and hogwash! Advertisers and enthusiasts being happier to write bad poetry about "The Road" than give any useful information. Harley-Davidson being as much a "label" as a motorcycle, books about them can easily be just coffee table picture books. This book comes much nearer to being a serious but colourful history of the Sportster than that. I learnt a lot about the order of model changes which had previously not been clear to me.It does have lots of pretty pictures. Being made up of a number of short articles about a particular year or development of the Sportster model based on a set of photos of a beautifully restored bike, roughly of the type discussed. This leads to some inaccuracies, when the text is compared to the model shown. I found a couple of other contradictions which the editor should have spotted, but these are much less annoying than the many pictures that straddle the centre fold of the page. With this type of paperback it is impossible to lie the pages flat without breaking the binding so these pictures cannot be properly viewed without spoiling the book. The style of the text is informal. Whilst almost parochial at times, it stopped short of being too annoyingly colloquial for my taste and I forgave it because it was interesting and informative. The first chapter covers the original 1957 model well but I thought it could have given more details of the unit construction sidevalve ancestors from which it grew. However, as these were not strictly Sportsters, I suppose that is fair. All stories have to start somewhere, but how I wish that there were some pictures of engine internals, or better still some clear line diagrams, to back-up all the descriptions of the design and ongoing developments. Apart from that, the content and the coverage of the book are quite comprehensive and, as there is a limited choice of books on the Sportster, this volume should not to be missed by enthusiasts and owners.
