3.0 out of 5 stars Back to square one, 11 Aug 2003
By V. Hayrabedian (London, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book has the misfortune to fall victim to that worst of trilogy traps: the middle-book-pitfall. The overwhelming impression is that nothing at all appears to happen in it, even though the plot is full of twists and escapades. Looking at the big picture, we can see that the ending leaves us pretty much back at square one, despite the illusion of progression. By the end of the book, Bran and Rissa have accomplished a great deal: they have begun work on their fleet, they have removed enemies from the ships allied to them, and they have begun to build a cosy love-nest (or is that fortress?). Yet, they are still on Number One. The Hulzeins are still there, filling in the background when needed. Engaging characters like Jargy are nowhere to be seen; instead, we get details of Rissa learning gunnery. Scores after scores after scores of her practice runs, while repairs happen all around.

The book serves its purpose: it advanced the plot along. The characters that need to arrive for the big battle arrive, the fleet is assembled, the plan is revelaed. Yet nothing actually happens. I, for one, am till waiting for 'The Long View' to be delivered from the States; I can't possibly leave Bran and Rissa in limbo.
