Product Description

Product Description

A body is discovered in a cave in the remote region of Cappadocia, Turkey. The woman died of gunshot wounds, and her corpse has lain undisturbed for twenty years. Inspector Cetin Ikmen is summoned from Istanbul to investigate and discovers a complex web of intrigue. Was she killed by her boyfriend, driven mad by love, or her husband, believing she would never bear the son he wanted so badly? When it is revealed the girl was pregnant when she died, the whispers and accusations increase. Ikmen, stifled among a rural community thriving on folklore and intrigue, begins to think he will never see clearly through the lies surrounding this case. One thing, however, is clear: the past is as potent as the present.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another enjoyable addition to the Inspector Ikman series, 7 Nov 2007

Although I don't know Turkey, I have read and enjoyed all of Barbara Nadel's novels ever since having been lent the first by a friend (who used to be a neighbour of hers!) I know her research to be second to none. She spends weeks in Turkey every year preparing the next book - and this is evident in her writing.

What I loved about this book was the amazing descriptions of the 'chimneys' in Cappadocia. They left me with a picture so clear that recently, on viewing the episode of Maichael Palin's programme on the New Europe, I recognised them instantly. They matched the word picture from this book so well that there could be no doubt that this was the landscape that she had described.

Once again, the mystery is intriguing, and the insight into Turkish life is fascinating.

If you have already enjoyed some of the Ikman series, I'm sure you will also enjoy this one.

If not, why not try this one? It's well worth a read!

Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another enjoyable Inspector Ikmen novel, 8 Jun 2007
By R. Singer "ontheshelf" (UK) - See all my reviews

Though these books do not come into the realms of truly great literature they are thoroughly enjoyable crime fiction and this one, set mostly in the weird landscapes of Cappadocia, is no exception. Having myself travelled with Turkish friends extensively in this area I thought she had captured the atmosphere and oddness of the place perfectly.

If you have enjoyed any of the other Inspector Ikmen books then certainly give this one a go.

2.0 out of 5 stars Over-researched, 5 Jul 2007
By Mark N (London) - See all my reviews
I know Turkey well and love Nadel's Istanbul novels.
Dance with Death despite (or because of) abundant on-the-spot research, detailed at length in the afterword, is a wooden affair, with absurd plot contrivancies to bring her characters to Cappadocia. Many urban Turks have deep and complex links to the rural communities their families come from, but this book misses the opportunity to explore this in a naturalistic way.

I had a hard time finishing this book. Please - back to the Bosphorus!

1.0 out of 5 stars Dance with disappointment
It was difficult to bring myself to give this book even one star. The exotic location is no compensation for wooden dialogue, stereotypical characters and disorganisation. Read more
