Product Description

Product Description

The nation has commented on and devoured Paul Gascoigne for years. They read his story. But not until now has anyone ever known what it is really like to wake every morning and be Gazza. What lies behind the cheeky grin, jokes and tears? Here Gascoigne, in the company of his therapist, confronts his demons and takes the reader into the recesses of his mind. The triggers that created explosive genius on the pitch, outrageous antics off it and at times plunged Gascoigne into dark despair are revealed together with the critical moments that influenced his alcoholism, depression, drug abuse, gambling, eating disorders and compulsive behaviour. This is more than the story of one man. It applies to people who face turmoil every day. Recognising a problem and seeking help is the hardest step. Through self-assessment forms and expert advice, any reader who sees a mirror of themselves will be offered help and a way forward. There has never been a book like this. Because there has never been a man like Paul Gascoigne.

About the Author

Paul Gascoigne was born in Gateshead in 1967. He made his professional debut for Newcastle United at 17 before moving to Spurs in 1988. After the 1990 World Cup he became one of the greatest stars in the game. In 1992 he moved to Lazio after a career-threatening injury and three years later to Rangers where he became one of the club’s most loved players. From there he played for Middlesbrough, Everton and Burnley. Following a brief spell in China he became player-coach of Boston United. For England he reached the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup and Euro 96. He was capped 57 times and scored 10 goals.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than meets the eye here..., 15 Jan 2007
Firstly, this book is not a stocking-filler for the lads: This goes way beyond the usual light-weight tabloid fodder (which sadly appears to have gone right over the head of one of the other recent reviewers). This book offers an insight into Paul's struggle to cope with his past traumas, the fall-out from which have often threatened to destroy him. There are countless thousands of people who will be able to relate to the therapeutic details contained within the covers which arguably classes this as a self-help book. The fact that Paul has achieved this much attests to his strength and determination to bounce back again and again. If you're looking for a few snappy anecdotes and a bit of boot room gossip buy the tabloids. If you're after a truthful account of the strategies he and countless other sufferers employ to cope with the world buy this book: One thing is for sure - there are very few among us who, if honest, will not take something of great value from this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Reading "Being Gazza" - Literally a Journey to Hell and Back, 10 Jul 2006
By Mr. D. R. Glen - See all my reviews

My god, what a load of old drivel. There's not much you can actually write to review this book as it is so dull. He writes about him not having had a laugh for about 3 years and my goodnes isn't he right. This book should have been written by him, and only for him. It's purely to help himself and that's where it should have been left, purely as help for him, not to bore the rest of us with the promise of an exciting read, only to bore us to absolute tears with the complete rot he's spouting. If you haven't already bought this, don't.
