Review

A fun but informative read - ideal for the wine buff (or bluffer) in your family!

(My Weekly (Christmas Special) )

Matthew Jukes's excellent The Wine List 2007... marks the next step up in connoisseurship... Jukes... seasons his recommendations with lashings of humour, and his advice on which wines to drink with which foods is very useful.

(What's On in London )

Wine lovers will appreciate The Wine List 2007... His straight-talking style cuts through the jargon and the selection is based on taste, price and availability.

(Food & Travel )

Each wine is described with panache, there is a detailed section on which wines best accompany which dish, and useful wine-region summaries and lists of wine merchants. The format is compact, and the design is excellent.

(Decanter )

Comprehensive... Jukes is a great award-winner and expert wine writer, and a wine buyer for the Bibendum restaurant... He also has a most readable style and sense of humour.

(The Lady )

You don't have to be a snob to appreciate the good stuff, you just need this handy book and a sense of adventure.

(Pure Yorkshire )

4.0 out of 5 stars keep it in your car glove compartment, 24 Feb 2003
This is an awesome little compendium of Matthew Jukes' 250 top wines for 2003. It is really helpful when out shopping for wine in the UK as he chooses large scale wines that are unlikely to be sold out by the time the book goes into print. It contains an A-Z of food and wine combinations that is really good when you're out shopping for that special meal accompaniment. Jukes makes some particularly good suggestions of wines to go with Indian food. This is great as most wine experts insist that wine simply does not go with spicy food. He then goes on to list his top wines in different categories such as sparking, white, red etc. The final section explains a little more about different grapes, regions and vintages and finishes with a list of supermarkets, chain stores and specialist merchants. Each wine has a code telling you where to buy it. Understandably, many of his top notch suggestions are only available from specialist outlets, but there are plenty of bargain supermarket recommendations under £10. The only downside is that it's quirky layout can make navigation a little difficult. This guide would work even better as a CD ROM searchable database or as something you could download in to a hand held PDA. The back page proclaims "Never drink a dull bottle of wine again". If you stick to Jukes' suggestions, you may not have to.
