Product Description

Product Description
"Number 57" is the story of a house and its inhabitants. Accompanying the six-part Channel 4 series, Number 57 will be restored to its original 1779 condition and then updated to show how our homes have changed through the Georgian and Victorian eras, the Arts and Crafts and Art Deco movements to post-war Britain and finally to the 21st century. The house and its occupants act as a manifestation of the social history of each era and this book goes beyond just documenting the history of the house itself. Rather it is a history of the changes in attitudes and technology that have affected the changes in our domestic arrangements. It also includes a comprehensive directory for home owners wanting to recreate the style of each period.

About the Author
Maxwell Hutchinson is the presenter of Number 57, having previously presented several series on television and radio, most recently, 'Demolition Detectives'. Maxwell is a practising architect and for three years was President of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling and interesting accompniment to the TV Series, 14 Nov 2003
Based on the TV mini documentary series of the same title, this book take you on the same journey through the history of No 57 Kingsdown Parade, only in slightly more detail.

Maxwell Hutchinson, describes in great detail what the went about trying to recreate, giving reasons that show just how much technology and fashion affect every aspect of the way that we and our ancestors live their lives.

A great lesson in social history and a fascinating read!
