Product Description

Product Description

It's 1942 and Dorothy Taylor, now eighteen, dreams of distant lands far from the grey backstreets of Rotherhithe where she has spent all her life. As the war rages on, excitement comes in the form of the Americans posted in London. Although Dolly is engaged to Tony, a boy from her street who has been called up, she can't help but fall in love with Joe, a dashing American GI who eventually asks her to marry him. But America is not all she imagined it would be, and she's shocked by the cool welcome Joe's mother gives her. As she struggles to make friends and understand the man she's married, Dorothy begins to realise that she made a terrible mistake when she walked away from Tony, and wonders if he even remembers the innocent young girl who broke his heart. Only when she returns to Rotherhithe can she find out if there is still a chance of happiness for the two of them.

About the Author

Dee Williams was born and brought up in Rotherhithe in East London where her father worked as a stevedore in Surrey Docks. Dee now lives near Portsmouth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warm and knowledgeable, 12 Dec 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Hopes and Dreams (Hardcover)
It's obvious that Dee grew up in this era and this particular area of London. No one who didn't know it first hand could make it come alive the way she does, and yet even though I grew up in a later era and a different city, I could still relate to Dolly and Penny, the daft things they did, the rollercoaster emotions, their worries about their own small world and the one currently at war.
This is written by a woman who loves her family and loves her friends and it shows in the warmth of her writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sorry that it sat on my bookshelf for so long, 5 Aug 2004

I purchased Dee William's "Hopes and Dreams" and let it sit on my bookshelf for a long time. What a mistake that was. "Hopes and Dreams" is a excellent book. Ms. Williams tells the story of young Rotherhithe resident who meets an American soldier and falls in love. But after years apart Dolly and her husband meet again in America, but time and the war can change people.
As with other books by Ms. Williams, she give the reader a heart-filled story with characters with real emotions. A book by Ms. Williams should not be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars not a good reader, 28 Oct 2009

Really enjoy this book as I do with all Dee Williams books. I followed her becasue she lives near where I come from so it was lovely to enjoy a local authors work and I have moved 300 miles away and still enjoy it. I have now started my mother-in-law on the books but I have t oget her the secondhand library books as she has to have large print.
