Product Description

Product Description

Kate and Josh Hutchins have lived on Dancing Hill Farm in Dorset for thirty years. Here they have brought up three children, expected to grow old, and imagined they would pass the farm on to one of their boys, like generations of family before them. But things have not gone to plan. Neither of their sons wants the farm, their daughter is in love with a man with no real liking for the countryside, and Dancing Hill itself is no longer the profitable place it was once.

And Kate is restless. Longing for some time to herself, dreaming of what she might have achieved had she not married so young. When her children give her a week’s painting holiday in Provence she seizes it like a lifeline, hardly realising what a dangerous thing it is that she is doing.

About the Author

Sarah Challis, whose father is the distinguished cinematographer, Christopher Challis, travelled widely with film units as a child. She has since lived in Scotland and California but is now happily settled in a Dorset village with three rescued dogs and three chickens. She is married with four sons.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have to disagreee, 23 Sep 2008
I think the earlier reviewer is unkind. I found this novel totally convincing in its portrayal of family life, Kate's long and stale marriage, the English countryside and farming in its current crisis. The characters were rounded and sympathetic and the relationships sensitively portayed. The parts set in France create a wonderful and stimulating contrast to the beautifully drawn English scenes, and serve to point up the difference in the life Kate imagines she might have lead had she not married so young. A lovely book - quietly moving and with real insight into the sort of crises ordinary people can find they are facing in ordinary lives.

2.0 out of 5 stars What happened with this one?, 28 Nov 2006
I've thoroughly enjoyed Sarah Challis's other books and was looking forward to On Dancing Hill. Unfortunately it doesn't match up to her previous books. The plot line is utterly predictable, the reader knows from the beginning that nice sensible Kate is going to find something new and exciting on her holiday, the reader can even predict the results of the minor sub plots like George's warning to Josh about the bulls etc.

There are chunks in the book thaat seem to have been put in as padding to get to some demanded word count since they don't have anything to do with the story - the train break down for instance. The scenes in Provence were particularly unconvincing, they read as if Sarah Challis was sitting at home in the Blackmore Vale (which she describes beautifully and appeallingly) writing about what she thinks Provence must be like at that time of year but in fact describing a summer in Dorset. In Provence in July no one waits to move out of the sun at 11.30, it begins to get unbearably hot at 9.00, likewise no-one wears jeans then either like Kate does all the time without apparently getting in the least overheated. Also the French do not go out to lunch at 2 in the afternoon - that's the Spanish, the French eat a lot earlier.

None of this would have mattered much if the charecters had been vibrant and exciting, but they were flat and dull and this reader ended up by losing all interest and the will to finish the book (which wwas done with an effort).

If you're new to Sarah Challis give this one a miss, every author has to have an off-day sometimes, try Killing Helen or Jumping to Conclusions, they are both good reads.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soothing, 21 Jun 2009

I thoroughly enjoyed "On Dancing Hill". Ok, it is not intellectually challenging and yes, a little predictable, but that was part of its charm.
If you have a lot of worries and things are not going your way, then this book provides some gentle and entertaining escapism. This is the first Sarah Challis book I have read and I shall look out for more.
