Product Description

Synopsis
Maya Malik is a 28-year-old single lonely aging Asian girl who wants a gorgeous husband and a grand ostentatious wedding. For a professional Bengali, her biggest fear isn't being overlooked for promotion. It's the realisation that she has to find a husband from a diminishing stock of eligible bachelors that consists of mommy's boys, coconut go-getters, and bendhoo bicharas. To join the league of the married, Maya endures family introductions, blind dates, with Internet meetings in a journey that takes her from London to New York to Dhaka, and then back to London again. And when close friend Jhanghir Rahman announces his sudden wedding, Maya realises that with love, life and marriage, a girl can use old world traditions, and new world savvy to get exactly what she wants. The A-Z Guide to Arranged Marriages celebrates the realities of an age-old tradition for the new generation. From bastard bridegrooms, interfering auntijhis's to wedding weepers, follow Maya's charming roller coaster ride through singledom and the arranged marriage process. 'Simply Splendid, so read, laugh and relate. Simply Splendid.' - HBA

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book - really liked it, took me down memory lane, 6 Mar 2006
By A Customer
My dad bought this book for me, he knows the author's father and so he gave me it to read.
I read this book on my journeys to and from university and I started to like it, it had quite a slow beginning but it gradually picked up pace and then slowed down a bit, the ending seemed drawn out and you pretty much know what's going to happen even from the start of the book but it was still an enjoyable read. The heroine, Maya Malik is likable but she starts to grate on your nerves after a while with her incessant rejection to all the men brought to her and her quest for true love whom she perceives to be with her best friend, Janghir. This book was a great read for me because of all the little things that the family did such as attempting to beat on their opponents with their sandals, for me that seemed just classic as I myself come from a Bangladeshi family and I actually recall an incident years ago where my father was ready to fight with a guy (who held a baseball bat) with his sandal. So I guess that brought back memories but it was also extremely funny, I found myself laughing out loud on the bus with 15 strangers staring at me as though I were a lunatic. Any book that can make me laugh out loud is definitly a book I would highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming and fun, 26 Jan 2006
By U.D. (Edinburgh, Mid Lothian United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is a classic romantic comedy. What i found particularly charming about this book is that unlike other Brit Asian Lit the main character. Maya is not going through any clash of identities angst but the usual twentysomething blues. Passages such as the young women being glared at for gossiping about men in the mosque are not only funny but also portray women you can identify with; bubbly, stroppy, chocolate eating and wanting to be loved. Good Fun.
