Product Description

Synopsis
The world's most effective fighting force was not led by Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, or Napoleon. In all of history, only one class of warrior has ever gone undefeated for over two hundred years despite almost continuous engagement and virtually always against overwhelming odds. The horses they rode were beyond comparison in terms of stamina, courage, and strength and their swords have been described as the finest cutting tools ever used in war. Indeed, the mere sight of these men approaching a battlefield was often enough to send an enemy fleeing. This is the story of how a unique and disciplined cavalry developed its most intimidating assets groups of men that actually bore giant wings as they rode into battle and wielded weapons capable of scratching the sky.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting and action-packed novel, 10 April 2007
The excellent reviews that have already been written about this novel say it all. On Wings is an intelligent adventure story that is as good or better than anything written by Bernard Cornwell or Patrick O'Brien. The setting is 16th century Poland, which was, at the time, the world's greatest superpower and its largest unified land mass. Enter the Polish Winged Hussaria - considered by most historians to be the finest cavalry that ever existed. On Wings takes its cue from one of the (obviously) biggest mysteries left behind by these legendary winged warriors by trying to answer the question: how and why did they come up with the idea of wearing wings on their backs?
The novel itself is very well-written and engaging, moving along at a fast pace with clarity and a surprising depth not often found in paperback fiction. Excellent research shines through in the backdrops and descriptions, but it is the action scenes that truly stand out - particularly a sword fight between a father and son and a massive attack against Tatar forces in 1570.
The last twenty pages are equally as good and are well worth the price of the book alone - for they relay the astonishing true history of the Winged Cavalry from the moment the fictional story ends (when the wings are developed) right up to the last moments of World War II.
Again, this is a great read that is highly recommended. When you finish you'll be on the Internet searching for more information about the Winged Hussaria wondering why you never heard of them before.
