Product Description

Synopsis
Irene a gifted young artist always paints with a large mirror strategically positioned behind her, as an aid with perspective. As she puts the finishing touches to her latest painting she stands back from the canvas to look at its reflection in the mirror and is shocked to see an extremely tall man half hidden by trees staring back at her. She had not put a figure in the painting so where had he come from? When she looked back at the canvas itself there was no one there. Quickly she gazed back at the mirror and was astounded to see that the glass had somehow taken on the appearance of liquid. Fascinated she tentatively put her hand out to touch it and in that split second finds herself transported into the world of her own painting. In this strange and frightening place she meets the mysterious tall man and many other amazing characters, along with some extremely terrifying ones. And so Irene embarks on an adventure, that will test every ounce of courage and faith she possesses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting, 7 Dec 2008
Having spent one complete night reading this book, I was amazed by the context and the manor in which it was written. It not only told you a story but also made you feel as if you were part of that book. Not as an outsider looking in, but as if you were travelling with them and feeling all the trials and tribulations that all the characters went through. The script is excellently written and the context is superb. You can visualise the characters and the places they are in, in the attempt to reach thier goal. This book could easily be made into a film without having to defer from the text The characters are very strong in the book and this makes it a pleasure to read. I feel you can relate to a character in the book as somebody in your past or in your future. I visualise that the characters are in all of us or in people we know. This has been written from the heart and even though it is fiction it could also be a reality as regards the story but not the actual events, that is what makes it enchanting. I look forward to reading more books of Y.I.Lee.

5.0 out of 5 stars well worth the read, 2 Sep 2008
By Mr. R. Harris (Warwickshire England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This really is an enchanting book and once you have started to read it you do not want to put it down.
You are drawn right into the storyline and feel that you are a part of the adventure, the way the various animals are portrayed and involved is quite fascinating.
I would also agree with other reviews that this would make a wonderful movie.
I eagerly await more books by this talented and fabulous author and would recommend it to anyone with young children.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Through a glass darkly" - A fantasy for over 12's where good triumphs over evil., 16 Aug 2008
This book is suggested as being for those age 12 and over, and I enjoyed the escapism it offered, as well as being able to revel in a secret world where danger has to be overcome and foes vanquished.
The phrase "Through a glass darkly" is universally interpreted to mean that humans have an imperfect perception of reality, and is an abbreviated form of a phrase from the Christian New Testament in 1 Corinthians 13.
The author admits in her forward that the phrase has always fascinated her, as indeed it has psychology scholars and song writers.
Y. I. Lee's story begins with Irene, a gifted young artist putting the finishing touches to her latest painting, using a mirror to help her with the picture's perspective.
The whole novel hinges around the mirror and the painting and we are drawn into a different world where Irene's destiny is to embark upon a quest.
The narrative flows smoothly and easily as the story unfolds, whilst the pace is ever onwards and the reader is drawn in, much as Irene is drawn into her adventure. Reality and fantasy sit side by side and we enjoy a good old-fashioned feel-good journey as the quest unfolds and dangers are faced.
There is plenty of detail throughout the book to add interest and depth to the characters, and we learn how Irene's childhood has shaped her present view of herself and the world.
The secret world which Irene discovers within her painting mixes naturally and seamlessly with her real-time world, as she embarks upon a quest, involving a beautiful stag, a strange box and a lovely glass horse.
Animal lovers will appreciate the variety of creatures which play their part in the book, but not in a mawkish way, as they help Irene, face danger themselves and fight off such beasts as the ersatz.
Ezekiel the white rat is an important character, and his sensitive and knowledgeable portrayal should encourage non-rat lovers to think again, and consider finding out more about such obviously intelligent creatures. The part where he does his best with artificial resuscitation is both touching and enchanting!
The novel ends positively, and whilst not a fairy tale ending, it gives plenty of hope for the future, concluding in such a way that there is an opportunity for a sequel.
The whole story is an innocent fantasy where good triumphs over evil, and with the current vogue for such fantasies: - Philip Pullman's "Golden Compass" and J. K. Rowling's "Harry Potter"- the novel has the potential to be made into a film.
