Product Description

Synopsis
John Carson is a Londoner who has lived in Weston-super-Mare for most of the past 40 years. In the mid-1980's, he began collecting earthenwares produced by "The Bristol Pottery", which was the factory associated with the name "Pountney" for much of its long history. As his knowledge of the Pottery increased, he became conscious of the many gaps that existed in the published information available, particularly in regard to the actual wares produced. Consequently, he saw a need for a comprehensive publication covering the whole period from the time creamware succeeded delftware at Temple Back in the late eighteenth century until the Pottery's last years in Cornwall in the 1970's. The results of his researches are now brought together in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last - a book on Bristol Pottery, 15 Oct 2008
By Ms. Helen M. Edwards - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
From time to time over the years, information has beeen published in various forms on particular aspects of the long and varied history of Bristol ceramics. What has been sadly lacking however is a comprehensive work covering the near 200 year life of the most prominent of Bristol's pottting industries, namely the Bristol Pottery, which was more popularly known as "Pountneys" in its later years.
John Carson has filled this gap.
John has been an avid collector for the last 20 years. His enthusiasm and knowledge of the subject is evident in his literary style giving us a very readable and informative book to enjoy.
Undeterred by the absence of any official records, John has interviewed other 'Bristol' collectors and former Fishponds factory workers, scoured books, magazines, newsprint, catalogues, brochures and archives to ensure as much information as is presently available is recorded in this book.
The result is a concise but comprehensive and beautifully illustrated record of the Bristol Pottery - its wares and personalities from its birth at Temple Back in the late 18th cent. through the Victoria Pottery and Fishponds eras to its demise in Cornwall in the 1970s.
The book is introduced by Sarah Levitt whose own social history of the Fishponds factory - 'Pountneys- the Bristol Pottery at Fishponds 1905-69'
was published in 1992. John continues with a structured view of the wares and people associated with particular periods. It includes a summary of marks and backstamps.
As Sarah says in her foreword the book will serve "as a wonderful memorial to all the dedicated people who worked for the Bristol Pottery over the years"

Helen Edwards

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Review of the Bristol Pottery, 1 Oct 2008
By Derek M. Wilding (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Bristol Pottery 1784 - 1972It is most timely that John Carson has chosen to publish his new book in the second half of 2008. For this is the time when the Bristol Industrial Museum is being radically remodelled and the Museum management are no doubt debating just how to reflect the rich and varied employment history of Bristol - of which Pountneys and its predecessors was a part - in their new displays.
John Carson's book complements Sarah Levitt's "Pountneys - the Bristol Pottery at Fishponds 1905 - 1969" published in 1992. He begins his comprehensive review of the major personalities and the products, shapes and patterns for which they were responsible with the Temple Back Pottery from 1784 and continues through the era of the Victoria and Fishponds factories and finally the ill-fated move to Cornwall which brought the history of Bristol pottery to a close in 1972.
John Carson writes with the enthusiasm and knowledge of a keen collector and the book is lavishly illustrated in colour with examples of many Bristol products over the years - mainly from his own collection but supplemented by items made available by Bristol Museum and other collectors.
The publication of the book has triggered many new memories from former employees of Pountney and Co and John is already thinking about a second edition ( when his wife will allow it ) to include the addition information which his first edition brings forward.
For the general reader "Bristol Pottery" gives a most readable insight into the rise and fall of a famous Bristol company. It is essential reading for anybody with an interest in the industrial and commercial history of Bristol and will serve as a vital reference book for collectors of Bristol pottery.
