This book is a gem. The cover, which is beautiful, attracted me at first, but I quickly became so engrossed that I couldn't put it down and even read it in the bath!

The history and intrigue of the time, which must have required a lot of research by the author, is cleverly woven into the story line and enhances it greatly. The book is most beautifully written, the prose, Kathleen's poetry and the illustrations are quite magical.

Reading about the lives of the first four daughters was wonderful, but "Hannah", portrayed in the last chapter, is the pièce de résistance - read it and weep!

After reading the last line and putting the book down, I sat gazing out of the window sorrowfully, because the unforgettable characters, which came into my life each day, were no more. This is one book that you CAN judge by its cover.
