Product Description

Synopsis
Joseph Skledowski, an apothecary taking refuge in England at the time of the Civil War, becomes disillusioned with the efficacy of the medicines of his trade and sceptical of its underlying philosophy. An accident brings him a revelation that leads him to question his alchemical assumptions and sets him on a faltering path towards scientific rationalism. The new life does not does not rid him of old and deadly enemies, inherited from his mentor, who believe him to possess valuable secrets; nor can he avoid the ravages of the Great Fires of Bristol and London. With the new life come discoveries and dangers, along with immense satisfactions, profound problems and a difficult love affair.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking good action story portraying an episode in the history of chemistry, 25 Dec 2007
This book will appeal to readers who like a scientific and historical background when they settle down to read a gripping story.

The fictive main character, Joseph Skledowski, gets caught up in a mixture of fictive and real historical events. Interspersed in the story he discusses the state of his emerging science with respect to and with varying amounts of respect for philosophers and scientists from Plato to Einstein.

Although increasingly unbelieving that lead can be turned into gold, Joseph's less spectacular but more accurate chemical studies are repeatedly interrupted in a gala of military intelligence, kidnapping, witchhunts and great city fires.

Extensively researched and wittily delivered. This book is a great read.
