A retired teacher of commercial subjects, Margaret Gail was a nine-year-old evacuee in September 1939. Based on personal experience and understanding of what was happening around her at the time, Margaret Gail tells us what life was like for someone growing up during World War II. Each chapter introduces a different aspect of life on the Home Front from 1939 to 1945, some topics being dealt with in more depth than others.

An easy to read memoir, it is amusing in some places, poignant in others and always interesting.

Teachers are finding it increasingly difficult to co-op someone of the older generation to go in to schools to respond to questions about life on the Home Front during the Second World War. This is my attempt to place on record for all time what it was like from one young person's point of view.
