Product Description

Synopsis
Voted the most unfashionable seaside resort in England Rushmoor Bay seemed destined for a massive leisure redevelopment by a local tycoon that would see the miniature railway and its pride and joy, The Flying Star locomotive, destined for the scrapheap. The dedicated volunteers that ran the railway met in the engine shed. It was clear to everyone present that without the tycoon the leisure scheme would never go ahead and that nothing could be allowed to stand in their way in restoring the line to its former pride and glory. They took a vote. It was unanimous that the man must be murdered. When the dead body of the tycoon is discovered on the beach and the police become involved the volunteers wonder if they have now reached the end of the line.

4.0 out of 5 stars Community spirit ignites to ensure survival of a railway, 12 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This is quite a short, lively and easy read. Although it centres on a small and struggling railway this should not put off those who have little or no interest in railways from reading this book. Essentially this is a novel about people, not railways and how they make, or refuse to make, adjustments in a rapidly changing world. There is an interesting mix of characters in the novel and the author conveys competently both the comic as well as the serious aspects to each of the key individuals in this bitter-sweet comedy. This novel is also a story of love, mystery, death, courage and redemption among the small community of volunteers who run the small railway, together with the very fine line that separates triumph from disaster. This book, particularly at the conclusion, stresses the optimism of the human spirit and how virtue and courage combined with sheer stubborness can triumph over adversity, no matter how overwhelming the odds. The interweaving of the serious and the humour, sometimes quirky and dry, ensures that this novel is a very enjoyable read and I hope that other readers will enjoy it as much as I did. My only real disappointment was that the author did not choose to develop this into a much longer novel.
