Product Description

Book Description

For the fashionable and affluent Randolph Buntings, it was just another day at the beach - that was until Fred spotted a mysterious lady in a red dress and Phrygian bathing-cap getting into difficulties far out at sea. Embarking on a brave and daring rescue attempt, Fred waded in and brought her safely to shore. The family applauded warmly - after all not every day had such excitement. It was only later that they spotted that this lady wasn't quite 'normal' - in fact, to be precise, she had a tail. For it seemed the Randolph Buntings had been visited by a mermaid. AUTHBIO: Known as the 'Father of Science Fiction', H G Wells was responsible for an entirely new genre of writing. It was his bold, daring and hugely innovative books that first introduced readers to the concepts of time travel, invisibility, genetic experimentation and interstellar invasion - ideas that have gone on to inspire future generations and given rise to the entire science fiction industry. Disturbingly accurate in his prophetic writing, H G Wells was also the author of a number of key sociological and historical works.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Wells's "Better dreams"., 21 Aug 2002
By A Customer
While H. G. Wells wrote several short fantasies and many justly famous novels of scientific romance, he left surprisingly few full-length fantasies behind him. 'The Sea Lady' (from 1902) is one of the rare chances to catch Wells the fantasist at length. Like his 1895 novel 'The Wonderful Visit', 'The Sea Lady' tells of ordinary lives turned upside down by the appearance of a mysterious stranger - in this case, the visitor being one Miss Waters, aka. the Folkestone Mermaid. Miss Waters contrives to get herself rescued from the Folkestone sea-front and gradually insinuates herself into the lives (and hearts) of her rescuers. While Wells makes some excellent fun with the problems of having a house-guest who has a tail instead of legs, the book gradually takes on a sombre note as it becomes clear that this particular Mermaid is also something of a siren ... A short but beautifully-composed blend of fantasy and social comedy.

3.0 out of 5 stars A charming but pedestrian tale, 8 July 2004
By A Customer
The Sea Lady is a love story, where the love interest happens to be a mermaid !. It is a charming and gentle tale, though the writing style is rather dated and pedestrian. It is of most interest, perhaps, to anyone who knows Folkestone well. The Leas don't seem to have changed much in a 100 years. Otherwise this is pleasant but unremarkable stuff, not a patch on Kipps or The History of Mr Polly.
