Product Description

Product Description

Nest and Mina still live at Ottercombe, their beautiful old rambling childhood home in the depths of Devon. They came to the house before the war, when as small children they played with their sisters and brothers in the gardens and the woods and the nearby beach while their mother read them stories and their father visited at weekends. It was, in retrospect, an idyllic time, when tragedy seemed far distant. Now they welcome their children and grandchildren, and especially young Lyddie, their niece, who lives in Cornwall with her handsome husband Liam. But when their sister Georgie, now somewhat frail and forgetful, comes to stay with them, aspects of their past start to revisit them. For Georgie knows all their secrets, secrets which she wants to share... --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover

In the big old house overlooking the sea, five small children listened as their mother read them a story. Theirs was an idyllic childhood, as they played on the beach and in the gardens and woods, before the war - and other tragedies - disrupted their lives. Now, many years later, Nest and Mina still live at Ottercombe, their beautiful childhood home, surrounded by their dogs and the beauty of the Devon countryside, thrilled by the occasional visits of their nephew and especially beloved niece.

But when their sister Georgie, now somewhat frail and forgetful, comes to stay at Ottercombe, memories of their past start to revisit them. As a child, Georgie claimed to know all their secrets - secrets that she now wants to share.

In this glorious novel , Marcia Willett explores the richness of childhood memories and half-forgotten secrets. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 16 Aug 2003
By J. E. Scott "tessbess" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Children's Hour (Hardcover)
I have read all Marcia Willett's books and enjoyed them all. This one is far far better. The book is very well written and the characterisation is superb, the characters are so easy to relate to that I felt I was living with them. I just did not want the book to end. It is a book to read over and over again. Buy it for yourself or for a present and you will be delighted you did so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb novel, 14 Aug 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Children's Hour (Hardcover)
The Children's Hour is an absolutely superb book. I have read and enjoyed all of Marcia Willett's previous books, but this one takes her to a new level. Like all her other books, it is engaging and delightful. Marcia Willett creates a world and then draws her readers in, so that one feels that one knows both the characters and their surroundings. One feels their pain and rejoices with them. One knows their dogs--Ms Willett has an enormous gift for canine characterization, and I can see and hear The Bosun (a Bernese Mountain Dog, and a starring character in The Children's Hour) sighing and flopping to the floor.

What makes The Children's Hour a new experience for those who love Marcia Willett's novels is its depth. Her books are never superficial, but this one qualifies as literature. As a novel, it is tremendous. I could not put it down, and when there were tears in my eyes at the end, I could not decide whether they were a product of the beautiful writing and moving plot, or whether I was sad that I had arrived at the end, with presumably a wait in store for the next novel.

As literature, The Children's Hour deals with emotions at great depth and with extraordinary sensitivity. While it is primarily a story, it is also much more, exploring characters and the relationships between them--as well as between their actions and their natures--at a level beyond where her other books have gone. This is not to criticize her other novels, but only to try to explain what makes this one at a new level from her others.

I very much hope that Bantam, her new publisher, brings this book out in the United States. It is a superb book, and I am sure that it will generate many fans for her here. As an American, I have had to find all her other books except for the two published here through Amazon's British web site. (Alas, Summer in the Country, her second book published in the US, is also her weakest, although I still liked it.) Fans of Rosamund Pilcher, of whom I am one, will adore The Children's Hour!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, 9 Aug 2003
By J. E. Scott "tessbess" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Children's Hour (Hardcover)
This book has been compared to Rosamund Pilcher's THE SHELL SEEKERS, which I love, but it cannot be compared to that book because it is simply better. It is spell binding. The author has created such realistic characters, locations and situations that you feel yourself part of the family and experiencing the events as you read the book. Marcia Willett's talent will no doubt be recognised as this must become a best seller. Her characterisation is as good as Jane Austen's and you are left with the feeling that she has been to the places described and experienced all the events of the story. It is so moving a story that the more soft hearted must shed a tear or two as they read it.
