Product Description

Product Description

Early in 1941, having just seen off at Euston Station the two young men whom she has loved for the best part of her seventeen years, Juno Marlowe is hurrying down a London street with her ill-fitting shoes in her hands. Aeroplanes thunder overhead; a battery of guns opens up. When a stick of bombs falls she cowers, then takes to her heels in flight. She is rescued from this nightmare by a gaunt stranger, frail and older than his years; guiding her up his front steps, he offers her the protection of his house. Given this respite from the bleakness of an existence where she has no home and family to turn to, Juno encounters first tragedy, then a series of events that take her to a house in the West Country and the blossoming of an English Spring into which war only occasionally intrudes. Here she may find peace, here she will no longer just be part of the furniture. Mary Wesley's new novel, full of her customary warmth and joyful wit, encompasses all manner of emotion and experience with a striking clarity of sense and expression. Forming a triptych with her other wartime novels, "The Camomile Lawn" and "A Sensible Life", this is one of her finest yet. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars My humble thoughts on this wonderful book., 16 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Part of the Furniture (Paperback)
I think this is my favourite book of alltime (although David Copp. is fighting a tough battle!) I've read the book hundreds of times and it makes me cry and laugh and smile over and over again without fail. If you're a romantic at heart, or you're just looking for a book to curl up with, cheer you up and make you feel warm - this is it. The characters are wonderful and connect with both the reader and eachother. It's not what I'd call soppy because so many brutal and emotional events occur and grip you, but it is delightful. If you liked Jane Eyre - you'll LOVE this. A glowing gem hides between the covers of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars wesley writes like she knows everthing about everything, 9 Jun 1999

This review is from: Part of the Furniture (Paperback)
this novel has such an easy opening that any reader who picks it up will be compelled to read on.The simple opening chapter sucks you in and delivers the most breathtaking journey of a group of people in an age where we would love to live and some have.dont let her history put you off. This book is a masterpiece.and if you let it.it will take hold of you page , after page, after page, twisting the story through times past, present and future, in a way only real life can do. this book is a must for everone. It also shows us how we can be much better people, with only the simpleist of helping hands. Its too good to be made for tv.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Easy Read, 25 Jan 2010
By C. Glynn (Essex) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was influenced to get this by the reviewer who compared it to Jane Eyre. I was therefore expecting a lot. It was an easy read. I loved some of the supporting characters - Bert, Anne & Priscilla but couldn't believe all the aspects of Juno's & Mr Copperstone Snr's characters.
It was an enjoyable book but as I had such high expectations ultimately I was left a little disappointed.
An easy read it is, Jane Eyre it isn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars A jolly good read!
It is my favourite among Mary Wesley's books - pure escapism and a jolly good read. I have given copies of this book as presents, including the German tranlation.
