The author gives an insight into the life of one of our longest serving monarchs. Basing her novel around factual information, Evelyn Anthony draws us into Elizabeth's life as Queen and we learn how she built up the confidence of her Kingdom and Court as the country's first female sovereign. William Cecil and Robert Dudley play key roles in her life as political aide and devoted companion respectively. When Mary Queen of Scots arrived on the shores of Scotland we learn how she masters the threat of invasion and her throne with her close advisors and Council. After many turbulent years, she finally bows to pressure over her troublesome cousin and agrees to her execution. The author details the interaction between Elizabeth and Robert during their years at Court, and we understand why Elizabeth is so adamant never to enter into marriage, much to the frustration of her Court and Council. With the help of Evelyn Anthony we can step back in time and experience a part of one of the most talked about periods in history.
