Neil McGraw's childhood is unusual. The son of a dour Scottish undertaker, he regularly finds himself locked among the coffins in the basement. No wonder he becomes obsessed with the question of questions: What happens when you die? Turning is back on the Scottish way of life, Neil sets off to find the answer. 5.0 out of 5 stars Rest assured this is a good read., 2 Dec 2001
By A Customer
The best book dealing with death and its effects on our lives since Ray Bradbury's childrens book 'The Halloween Tree'. Much funnier though, with an average of one incident of gallows humour every page. Seriously, It's Dead funny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stick with it and you'll be hooked., 24 Jul 2001
I struggled a bit with the first few pages of this book, but quickly got drawn into it's style and humour. As well as being an fascinating story of funeral folk it also questions the nature of death and the rituals that surround it. Alan Spence seems to be getting a great deal off his chest in this novel but only occasionally does that become obvious or intrusive. Very funny and ultimately very moving too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A look at the subtle humor in the akwardness of death., 29 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This novel directly confronts the idea of death and the ways it can be looked at, including a spiritual realm and as a money maker. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and cannot wait to read another Spence novel.
