5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the serious student of calligraphy, 30 Mar 2001
This is a superb book, suitable for the beginner and more experienced calligrapher alike. The author is a Fellow of the (UK) Society of Scribes & Illuminators, and a respected calligrapher and lettering artist whose work has appeared in several major calligraphy exhibitions, as well as in private collections. She is also an experienced teacher of the subject. The book opens with an introduction, followed by clear and detailed information on equipment and materials before getting to grips with important basics such as how to assemble, handle, and use a broad-edged pen. The book then gets into its stride with a methodical study of five major calligraphic hands. This begins with Roman capital letters, looking at high quality Roman Imperial capitals from the 2nd century AD (the Trajan inscription) and building up to pen capitals through the methodical study of the alphabet stripped to its most fundemental form - skeleton letters. The other hands (Foundational Hand, Italic, Uncials, and Versals) are examined in the same detailed manner. The book continues with excellent advice on layout, margins, spacing, weight, and the making of a finished piece. The second half of the book looks in detail at the making of fifteen different projects - from wine labels to a poster; a manuscript book to a calendar. Each has been carefully selected to cover a wide range of skills and disciplines and made by a leading calligrapher. The projects are clearly described and beautifully photographed. The great stength of this book lies in it focus on quality and serious study; on the idea that to gain the greatest satisfaction from the subject you should take the time to study it properly.
