Product Description

Product Description
Terry Eagleton explains that freedom, for Marx, entailed release from commerciallabour, "a kind of creative superabundance over what is materially essential". Eagleton outlines the relationship between production, labour and ownership which lie at the core of Marx's thinking. Marx's utopia was a place in which labour is increasingly automated, emancipating the wealth of sensuous individualdevelopment so that "savouring a peach [is an aspect] of our self-actualisation as much as building dams".

5.0 out of 5 stars An accessible account of Marx's beliefs, 4 Dec 2000
This book offers an easily comprehendable description of the essence of Marx's theory. The key to Eagleton's writing is his belief that Marx had no sinister plans, only a belief that the world could be organised in a way in which people were 'truely free', without the contradictions and oppressive practices which capitalism is built upon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly up to date, 4 May 2006
I bought this book to know a little bit about Marx's thoughts, being too lazy to read the Capital or his other writings. But I was surprised to see how up to date these ideas were, in an apolitical sense. I work in computers, in particular with and in the fields of open source software. I'm particularly interested in the open source movement as a method of producing software and other things (see changethis.com for more). When I read this book I realised that these ideals were in so many ways very close to Marx's. There are differences in so far as the path is different (no "revolution", no socialism), but the realisation of the individual in Marx's communist ideal and the open source ideal in term of social movement (I include blogs and so on in this) are indeed very similar. Anyone for a thesis on the subject?...

Anyway, all this thanks to Terry Eagleton, brilliant author with a crisp vocabulary and a gift to summarise complex concepts in a few understandable and enjoyable chapters.
