Product Description

Product Description

Prussia, a state which contributed so much to European civilization, only exis-ted as an independent power for 170 years. Sebastian Haffner, a Prussian by birth, reassesses the legend and tells the short but dramatic history of this unique state. He casts fresh light on its foundation, its struggle to become a great power in the eighteenth century, its important role as one of the Three Black Eagles with Austria and Russia, and its eventual disappearance from the map of Europe after the establishment of the German Empire.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting, informative, thought provoking - a great book, 7 Mar 2002
By A Customer
An interesting and informative book which sheds light on many topical points regarding both the unification of Germany and Prussia's legacy. Haffner does justice to this missunderstood state and shows how many people have misinterpretted Prussia as being the prelude to Nazi Germany, and how it's remarkable war machine was far from an attempt by Prussia to conquer Germany and infact the very defensive force which kept it from being destroyed by the volatile European political climate around it. Unfortunatly it is easy to miss some of the more important facts and i found I had to read the book twice to fully understand it. A must for those interested in the history of this great state and definitely worth a look for those studying the European History AS level, like myself.
