3.0 out of 5 stars An amusing book on Cambodia ( yes - One does exist!), 14 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Are journalists parasitic creatures feeding off the misery of others? This is one of the interesting questions that this book poses. A book that focuses on the struggles of freelance journos in Cambodia. The often absurd situations they find themselves in, while in pursuit of a lucrative story, during the 1993 elections and UN occupation make for an amusing read. Although this is not the book to read if you are looking for history/culture or a travelogue.

I found it a fascinating insight into the world of travel/political journalism and NGOers. I did find it sensationalist at times. There does seem to be a genre of books about Cambodia that seek to shock the reader. I have been to Cambodia and while there is plenty of the asurd and contradictory, I think books like this and 'off the rails in Phnom Penh' often present a side to this beautiful country that gives the impression that its all drugs, guns and prostitution. I might have thought twice about visiting there if I had read this previous to going.

It is a very amusing read at times in contrast to many of the books on Cambodia. I think despite the tradgedy of this country, the humour of the people there and the often amusing asurdities one finds need to be reflected as well, which this book achieves. Carol Livingston, through her anecdotes of her attempts to get a headling KR story, questions all of our motivations in our fascination with The KR.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and full of insight, 16 Feb 2007

This book is better than the dust cover reviews will lead you to believe.

There is nothing remotely hilarious about this book, as an American Reviewer would have you believe. There is nothing remotely funny about NGOs behaving incompetently ..............

But forget all of that, having just returned from Cambodia, it does reflect the chaotic logic of that country and its wonderful spirited people pulling their lives and country together.

It is an easy to read book, which, in its naive way, gives rewarding insights. But it avoids the difficult bits, like illegal American bombing; western support for KR etc etc for this you MUST look elsewhere.

I visited the Killing Fields of Pol Pot, but the killing fields of the Americans are not a tourist destination. I guess the indiscriminate bombing of 250 000 people is conveniently forgotten.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enthralling, informative and insightful, 21 Sep 2007
By D. LAWRENCE - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book a few months before going to Cambodia. Although it is quite an old book, describing the time just after the UN had moved in to Cambodia to help with elections after the fall of the Khmer Rouge and the ousting of the Vietnamese, it is still very relevant to the state of Cambodia today.

If provides background and history on recent events in a relatively easy format but it is easy to find yourself lost amongst the many acronyms and parties involved in the story. A glossary would make this book so much better, perhaps an index is also required!

The author I found to be extremely down-to-earth and honest about herself and the situations she found herself in. She expressed her thoughts although not always PC or complementary and expressed her fears and inadequacies. She also shows courage in her adventures, even just visiting Cambodia in the first place at that point in time.

This book makes a great journal and turns into a great story about the author, Cambodia, the politics, the agencies and the people around her. It also contains the elements of mystery and a thriller that a even a novel would desire.

Sometimes the writing can be a little confused but overall I was as impressed with the author as I was with the story it told.
