Product Description

Product Description

In her brand-new travelogue, intrepid ex-headmistress and bestselling author Anne Mustoe dusts off the bicycle clips once more and embarks on a remarkable journey through South America. Following in the bike tracks of Che Guevara, Anne retraces the route this iconic revolutionary figure once tread, as documented in the famous "Motorcycle Diaries". A second route takes her to Potosi, the highest city in the world, as she travels to the Mountain of Silver. Beautifully written and wonderfully evocative, "Che Guevara and the Mountain of Silver" charts an epic journey by bike and train through South America's most colourful and historically interesting areas.

From the Back Cover

In her latest travelogue, Anne Mustoe follows in the bike-tracks of Che Guevara as she travels – by bicycle, bus and rail – through South America, from Buenos Aires, through Argentina, Chile and Bolivia.
55 years before her, the young Che had set off from the same starting point astride his friend’s ramshackle 550cc Norton. It would be the beginning of a life-changing journey and a decisive episode in his rise to revolutionary icon. Anne’s wisdom of age is a touching counterpoint to Che’s idealism of youth, though the area’s politics are as inescapable as ever when Anne witnesses the funeral of Augusto Pinochet.
Swapping bike for train, Anne embarks on a remarkable rail journey high into the clouds of the Bolivian Altiplano, before catching a bus to the highest city in the world – Potosi – and the famous Cerro Rico: the Mountain of Silver.
Anne’s captivating story is steeped in the history, politics and breathtaking landscape of South America, and will prove an enchanting read for anyone fascinated by this potentially wealthy continent and its rich variety of people.
Praise for Anne Mustoe:
'Evocative reading' Observer
'Her wry sense of humour is one of the great charms of Lone Traveller' Daily Telegraph
'A book about the true spirit found in real travellers, written by a real traveller' Wanderlust

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but where's the bike...?, 24 Jul 2008
By Stephen Carr "ardvaark5" (Bradford, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Anne mustoe's cycling books are pretty good - they give a lively sense of the countries she's travelling in and are easy to read. She has a good 'angle' on the travels she makes. This book continues these good features. There's an excellent sense of the different countries she travels through - Chile, Bolivia and Argentina. She does her usual stuff about the historical background - how the places got to be as they are now - which is once again pretty good for a lightweight read. What there isn't in this book (and why it is only three stars) is much sense of this being about a bike journey - she does a bit of desultory cycling (complaining about headwinds, evidently not very keen) in the first third of the book (partly with another rather unadventurous female companion) and then it's buses and coaches all the way to the end of the book. So don't buy this book if you want Anne Mustoe the cyclist. She even says at one point that she couldn't do cycling because she was constrained by book deadlines too tight to achieve on the slow old bike. The observations of the landscapes are through a coach window for the most part. This is quite disappointing for people who like to dream of big bike tours. But if you are happy with her usual picquant observations, and aren't too fussed about the cycling angle, then you'll no doubt enjoy this. Her observations are a bit different - a sort of grandma of travel writing. But for me there was too little cycling, too little sense of the road and the landscape from the saddle of a bike - which is, of course, a very different thing from the view from a bus window.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not thought through and a bit of a mess, 24 Jul 2008
By Annie "pandaf" (Oxford, England) - See all my reviews
I so wish I hadn't bought this book, I ended up really irritated. I know that Anne Mustoe is not exactly Josie Dew and that her books have an erudite and headmistressy tinge to them but this one was irritating in so many ways. Her title suggested that you might find out something about Che Guevara but all she did was use his name to hang a bike ride on and then poke fun and criticism at him and at Cuba. In contrast to, say Dervla Murphy, she found out nothing about the people or the economy or political history of Cuba and the South American countries and she came across as a dotty old right-wing lady. As someone else commented, there was little actual cycling in this book and she used the problem ridden motorcycle ride of Che as an excuse to hop on buses whenever she fancied. There were a few pages of interest allotted to the silver mines and the Aztecs but I just flicked through the last third and wondered which charity shop to donate it too. I think I've decided I've 'done' Anne Mustoe now, there are a lot of good cycling books out there, maybe she should take up knitting.

3.0 out of 5 stars A intresting look at Life in South America , 19 Dec 2008
By Daniel Storey "Book_Worm_Daniel" (Rochester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I can understand what the first two reviewers are saying when they mention the fact that Anne does not do a lot of bike riding during this trip.
This book in my opinion is more about South America than it is about riding a bike though South America
Anne Mustoe has been travelling around the world on her trusted bike for many years now and this book is one of the latest Anne has written.
Whilst in South America Anne decided to follow a route once taken by Che Guevara and his friend though Argentina, Chile and Bolivia.
During the trip Anne meets a lot of fascinating people from the very well off Chileans, to the poor Bolivians all of them having their own story to tell but all offering the same hospitality towards her.
Unfortunately some of the trip can't be done riding her trusted bike so she uses bikes and trains.
As a Railwayman myself i found the journeys she did by train in Argentina and into Bolivia very fascinating and a real eye opener.
During each chapter Anne speaks about Che's journey which was done some 50 years ago and also gives a lot of information into South American history which personally found very interesting and informative.
Some readers will say their are better Anne Mustoe books out there but as this one was the first one i have ever read i found it a very enjoyable read and will be reading more books of hers in the future.
