Product Description

The lure of a long-distance ride leads Mefo Phillips to team up with her sister Susie and their spotted Appaloosa horses Leo, a flirt with a passion for Mars Bars, and affectionate, gluttonous Apollo, for a pilgrimage down the medievil Way of St.James from Canterbury to Spain. The lure of a map of European glof courses entices Mefo's husband Peter to follow them in a rackety old horsebox...Slowed by thunderstorms, vertgo, worn-out horseshoes and a variety of eccentric farmers, it's boiling midsummer by the time they reach the Castilian plains after a meander across lush springtime France. With 1,700 miles, four mountain ranges, and encounters with galloping goats, nude pilgrims, rampant donkeys and a fountain of red wine behind them , horses and humans are inseparable by the time they reach Santiago and the suddenly daunting prospect of a trundle in the horsebox back to England and a normal life.


About the Author

A contributor to Yachting Monthly, Classic Boat and The Spectator, Mefo Phillips is a practising lawyer, as well as being an accomplished equestrian and sailor. She is active in the British Horse Society and is planning another trip - this time to Rome - on Leo, her characterful Appaloosan show horse.

What a great light hearted look at what must have been a very trying experience. Mifo makes it all sound so easy! The book flows easily and should appeal to a wide range of readers. Although they follow a religious pilgrimmage route on horseback the book is not just for the religious or horsey. It is a great read.

If you only read one book this year make sure it is Horseshoes and Holy water as it is one of the funniest books I have read for a while!

Not only is Mefo a tad eccentric but also extremely endearing. This book not only documents their hard travels, the human compassion for others while travelling and general bureaucratic nonsense that is government.

Plus, there is the question of religion, are you a believer? This is all done in a light hearted funny manner which will make you laugh out loud!

More importantly, Mefo captures her love for her family (her Children Oliver and Clara) and the love that Mefo has for Peter and vice versa.
